Emergency Preparedness

We have several types of emergency drills as part of our school safety and emergency preparedness program. You may hear your children talk about these events, and we wanted to share a bit about what we do.
  1. We have monthly fire drills. A VERY LOUD alarm goes off in the school buildings and the children and staff evacuate with each class going to specific meeting places outside for attendance taking. During the lovely spring and fall weather these are nice diversions to the outside. During the winter, the environment can be more challenging. At times they occur when some students are already outside. We have had a couple of fire drills this year and they have gone very well, with a quick evacuation time.
  2. We conduct "shelter-in-place" drills. We had this year's first practice of this drill by program this week. Each program goes to a set place inside the building to shelter in preparation for an emergency. We discussed this in age appropriate ways: the toddlers played a "quiet game", the Children's House played "sardines" and the Elementary and Middle School followed teacher instructions precisely and quickly. All went well.
We are part of the "Town of Brattleboro and Brattleboro Schools Emergency Response Plan". We have coordinated with local officials and emergency responders to ensure that they know our campus and community well and will be able to assist efficiently in an emergency situation, including evacuation, should the need arise.

Lower EL:
Our undefeated Lower El team has been practicing hard in preparation for our next and last two games of the season! Come support us Monday here at Hilltop, and cheer us on as we play Guilford Central School at 3:30pm. On Wednesday, we will play our last game against St. Mike's up at the Brattleboro Little League Field  at the corner of Oak Grove and Baldwin street at 4pm. The school van will be conveniently transporting most students to the game. Please be sure to pick your child up at the Little League Field. Our final practice will take place on Thursday, October 27th.

Upper EL:
This fall has been an incredible journey with our Upper Elementary soccer team. With each practice at the beginning of the season, we developed an understanding that passing the ball and working, as a team, would be the best way to accomplish our goals this season. As games began, we started to see our true potential. Since the beginning of our season, we are undefeated in our regular season games!

The biggest highlight of our season came from our epic ride at the Putney Tournament. We showed up the first day excited, but still a little sleepy. We ended up losing our first 3 games, however, we were able to cap off the day with a great win against Putney Central. Going into the second day, we were easily the underdogs being placed as the number 8 seed. But the way we played, the way our team bounced back from our first day can only be described as AWESOME! We went out, battled hard, believed in each other, and played with unbelievable heart on our way to making it to the finals and finishing in second place! Throughout the day the players wanted nothing more than to do well. They cheered each other on and continuously voiced their constructive opinions on how we could do better. It is rare to see a team use their voices to their advantage like this group did.

The Upper El's will be wrapping up their season with two more games. We have our final home game tomorrow, Saturday, October 22nd at 9am against the Brattleboro Rec. And finally on the October 29,  we will travel to Chesterfield. Thanks to everyone for all the support and hopefully you can make it out to cheer us on tomorrow morning!

Notes from an Upper EL Soccer Mom:
Wow! Wow! Wow! What an exciting weekend for the Upper El soccer team at the Putney Tournament last weekend! This diverse group of players came together in such a charismatic, supportive, positive, and skillful way under Coach Chris. There was a rowdy group of parents and fans cheering the team on through very chilly (and sometimes frosty) games. Our persistent players rose from an 8th place standing on Saturday to runner up on Sunday - unbelievable! But best of all was the inspiring way the team appreciated every player's contributions, shared in the success, remained positive despite initial losses, and played with such heart. Way to go, UE!

Middle School:
The Middle School soccer team this fall has been playing some exceptional soccer. Each game they go into, they show the confidence and poise they need in order to create the opportunities to win these games. They are passing the ball well and sharing the ball equally among all players. Our toughest competition came when we went up against a solid Dummerston team. This was a different opportunity for us, as we had to play 11 on 11 and use a much bigger field than we were used to.  This did not phase us, however, and we went in and battled all the way to the final whistle. In the first half, we won the half off on a bomb from outside the 18 into the top right corner. It truly motivated our players to continue to fight and grind out a 1-0 half-time lead.  Unfortunately, the game did not end in our favor, but there was never a moment that we lost our belief and heart in that game.  Each game we have played, our understanding, determination, and camaraderie has made us all into better players.

The Middle School will be bringing our season to a close with one final game on Monday, October 31  at 4:00pm.  It is our last home game and we will be taking on Greenwood. Come and show your support as we wrap up our season!
