Author Features: Barbara Reid & Danny Ramadan

In your opinion, what makes a great story?

Barbara: I love a story that pulls me into a different world, time, place, or character’s point of view. When I am reading a great story, I don’t think: “I’m reading a story.” I just feel that I’m experiencing everything that the characters are, that I’m living in their world. I like the combination of seeing

the world through different eyes and finding similarities. A character or characters may be very different than me, but the emotional connection draws me in and keeps me turning the page. Great picture books have illustrations that don’t just echo the story but enrich the text, creating a

whole piece of art.

Danny: A great story makes us care. It doesn’t need to be enormous or dramatic; it simply needs characters who feel real and want something deeply. The best stories entertain us while quietly changing how we see another person—or even ourselves.

September Feature: The Story Hunter

An extraordinary story that celebrates the art and origin of storytelling itself!

In this unique and captivating new book, a curious stone age hunter-gatherer child follows Grandmother on an unusual hunting expedition into a deep cave. Overcoming fear of being swallowed by the dark, the child experiences the painted animals that spring to life on the cave walls and takes part in painting a new family story, leaving his marks in the form of handprints. Inspired by this magical experience, the child chooses to become a story hunter, carrying the community’s stories as they move on.Using her signature Plasticine artwork, award-winning author and artist Barbara Reid delivers a beautiful tale of discovery and the roots of creativity.

September Feature: Salma Keeps Her Word

Salma reconnects with her first language—and with her grandmother—in the latest book in this award-winning series perfect for fans of Dory Fantasmagory and Stella & Marigold.

When her grandmother visits from Syria, Salma struggles to keep up with Tita’s Arabic—and Tita doesn’t want to learn English. Even worse, Tita seems disappointed in Salma. Salma is eager to share her life with Tita, but speaking to each other feels harder than ever. With her own creativity and help from her friends, including jokester Ayman and kind Granny Donya, Salma discovers all the ways we can communicate without words—from a backgammon tournament, to body language, to music—and what Arabic means to her family, her community, and herself.
