Hire a Veteran Day

Did you know that there are approximately 17.4 million veterans in the United States? The latest U.S. Census states that the veteran population in Delaware is roughly 65,000. The State Chamber, along with several other partners, work diligently with veterans’ groups to find job placement opportunities for those who have left the armed services but need or desire to keep working. Not too many years ago, veteran unemployment was high. Yet through the efforts of many, employers targeted vets with job opportunities and the results were positive.

Last week our Joint Military Affairs Committee recognized our 2022 "Warrior Friendly” businesses—M. Davis & Sons and Zip Code Wilmington—for their dedication to hiring veterans and making accommodations to those individuals or family members supporting someone in active-duty status. Governor Carney assisted these efforts and issued a proclamation announcing, that today—July 25—is “Hire a Veteran Day” here in Delaware, which aligns with National Hire a Veteran Day. Today as we honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, we encourage local businesses to hire former and current servicemembers as they bring valuable skills and values to the workforce such as leadership, accountability, and teamwork.

The Governor also signed SS 1 for SB 188, which increases the personal income tax exemption for military pensions with the goal to encourage more veterans to call Delaware home.

As we enter the last work week of July, several important economic data points will be forthcoming. Tomorrow we’ll see the S&P Case-Shiller national home price index and the year-over-year results from May. New home sales from June will be announced tomorrow morning too. On Wednesday, June durable goods orders and pending home sales figures are out that morning, while Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will hold a press conference that afternoon. Thursday brings us jobless data, while on Friday we’ll see inflation, personal income, and consumer spending figures from June.

Companies with earnings calls this week begins today with NXPI Semiconductor, Squarespace, and Whirlpool. Alphabet and Microsoft headline the Tuesday calls and are joined by 3M, Archer-Daniels-Midland, Chubb, Coca-Cola, Fiserv, GE, GM, Navient, and UPS. Wednesday’s calls are headlined by Meta Platforms, Boeing, Norfolk Southern, T-Mobile, and Waste Management. Thursday brings us calls with Amazon, Apple, Chemours, Comcast, and Mastercard.
