H&H motivation!
Some food for thought...

Christina's Corner
15 years of H&H!

We are celebrating a big milestone this month...August 2019 marks 15 years in business!!

This is such an emotional month for me that I am actually speechless and have been drawing a blank on what to say. Normally it is so easy for me to express my feelings -- but not his month! In addition to celebrating H&H's anniversary, we currently have a DREAM team. If you have been in this month, then I know you feel the energy. This month has been emotional and energetic, nostalgic and busy, and sometimes even a bit overwhelming for me -- but all in a very good way!

I am so honored to be in business in a tough industry -- and I know 100% of this is thanks to amazing clients who trust the process. We have had 15 successful years serving the Leawood community in a shopping center that is hidden away. I started His & Her Fitness when I was in college. I designed the plan and then found this space. My family thought I was nuts, except for my Grandpa who said "you have a plan and you are going to be great". When I think of how things have thrived this long, I know it is because of the strong foundation it was built on. Many fitness places lose their core values to growth goals or industry trends -- but not H&H.

At His & Her Fitness we are still committed to "one person at a time living a healthy life." We continue to educate clients on eating balanced meals and doing creative cardio (which not only helps to train your heart, but also aids in muscle recovery). And, of course, we also work on weight training, flexibility and balance. Our training programs focus on whatever helps each client.

As a 15 year celebration, the first person to email his/her cheat meal to JONAM and MONICA will receive one FREE creative cardio session with family, coworkers or friends! Click  HERE  to be the first to reply! Click on their picture, then the "Click here to join" button and send them your cheat meal!!

This month please bring one person in the door that has never been to H&H before -- because of course we love new clients, but we also want to help everyone be as healthy as you! And plan to take a minute this month with your trainer and review the measurements and goals reached over the years. We recognize that your success is always a team effort and we are so excited that you are part of that team!

Again, I am so blessed to see so many successful individuals here daily and for the last 15 years. THANK YOU!!

Christina's Kitchen
Goat Cheese Boursin, Tarragon Dill Vinaigrette

Serves 4
1 bunch asparagus
1 pound golden beets
8 ounces shiitake mushroom caps, julienned
1/4 cup goat cheese boursin (see recipe below)
1 cup baby arugula
1 recipe terragon dill vinaigrette (see recipe below)

1. Prepare beets - prepare oven to 400 degrees. Wrap each beet individually in foil and place on sheet pan. Roast beets until they can be easily pierced with a fork, about 45 to 60 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, and peel beets with dry paper towels, then cut them into 1/2" dice. Toss in vinaigrette
2. Prepare asparagus - trim the woody asparagus stems by bending them until they break; the asparagus will naturally break where the stem becomes woody. Discard the woody ends. Heat a cast iron skillet then add minimal oil Saute asparagus in small batches until browned and just tender about 2-3 minutes. Set aside to cool. Cut the asparagus on the bias (at a diagonal) into 1" pieces and toss with lemon zest.
3. Saute shiitake - saute mushrooms in hot skillet until browned; season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
4. Putting it all together - arrange beets, asparagus and shiitake on each plate. Dot with small balls of goat boursin. Lightly toss argula in vinaigrette and top composed salad with greens.

Tarragon-Dill Vinaigrette Lemon Oil
2 cups of canola oil
Strips of zest from 1 lemon
1 stalk lemongrass, tough outer layers removed and bottom 4 inches roughly chopped

Vinaigrette
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 1 lemon
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon tarragon, torn
1/2 teaspoon dill, snipped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons tarragon, roughly chopped
1/4 cup lemon oil
1/2 cup olive oil

1. Prepare lemon oil - In a medium heavy saucepan over very low heat, combine oil, lemon peel and lemongrass. Cook, uncovered, until aromatic, about 1 hour. Do not let oil boil. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Strain through a mesh strainer into a heatproof container. Cool completely before using. May be stored in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.
2. Prepare Vinaigrette - In a medium bowl, whisk together lemon juice, mustard, tarragon, dill, salt, sugar and pepper. Slowly whisk in lemon oil, then olive oil. Adjust seasoning, if necessary.

Goal Cheese Boursin
1 garlic clove, minced
8 ounces goat cheese, at room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon fresh dill
1 tablespoon chives, minced
2 tablespoons parsley, minced
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Alex and Kara Ewy

Alex-When I first came to His & Hers fitness I had two goals. One was to get myself into better shape and live a healthier lifestyle. The other was to find an activity or hobby that I could share with my wife so that we would get to spend more time together. I managed to combine the two goals and accomplish them at the same time by having my wife as my workout partner.

It might seem a little odd, but actually it is a very rewarding thing to do together because you get such an appreciation for just how hard each of you are working to accomplish your fitness goals. It is definitely a bonding activity that has brought us even closer together. It is really helpful to have your spouse on the same page with you from a diet and exercise perspective so that you can support each other when one of you might not be feeling motivated. The regular cadence of workouts and then nightly cardio time has built a structure of healthy routines into our lives that allow us to look forward to being able to spend the time together.

Christina & Monica have done a great job of not only pushing us in workouts, but also teaching us the habits we need to live a healthy life. The results after one year have been absolutely fantastic.

Kara-I am very honored to be client of the month. My husband and I started this wellness journey last November - right before Thanksgiving. Think of all the temptations that comes with Thanksgiving! Christina taught us what we should eat and that we could even have dessert. I was very surprised at how much we could eat and still lose weight. Since then we have learned healthy food choices, food journaling, and most importantly to keep our bodies moving every day. We do strength training twice a week and cardio 6x/week.

My expectation was to improve my overall health or as Christina would say "fit not skinny" but I was blown away by the effort of the staff at His & Her Fitness to push me past my comfort zone and really enjoy the journey. Every single day I can tell that my body is getting stronger. I do not fatigue walking up large hills. I actually looking forward to it. I look forward to working out. I have never said that in my life! The atmosphere at His & Her is so welcoming and I have made so many great friends. I am paying closer attention to what my body needs based on the education Christina provides. It's incredible and we could not be more thrilled with our experience and success.

It wasn't very long, and our 14-year-old son joined the journey with us. I feel blessed to be on this journey with great people but most importantly blessed that my husband and I are doing this together with love and have encouraged each other and our kids to lead healthy life styles as well.

I had the privilege of playing sports growing up. The camaraderie that I had with my fellow teammates is something I will never forget. They were like a second family to me, always encouraging me and pushing me to be better. They were there when I made mistakes to pick me up and encourage and they were there in victories to praise and rejoice with me. I had an amazing coach that once told me there is no "I" in Team and that the best potential of "ME" is "WE". When our team realized that, we started playing not as individual units but together in unison as a true Team....and guess what, we won and we won a lot. You may ask what does this have to do with fitness? It has a lot to do with fitness. At His and Her Fitness each and every trainer there works together to provide the best atmosphere and training for each and every one of our clients. We learn from one another, and help one another to give you the best training session each time you come in. You are not tackling your fitness goals by yourself, you have us there with you each and every step you take. We are there to help you through the rough times, to build you up, to motivate, to call you out when we know that you have done something to detour you from your ultimate goal, but most importantly we are there to rejoice with you when you have success. Making a life change can be scary and we want you to know that you are not alone. Whether it's a question about an exercise, or you're out to eat and don't know what to eat, or you're at home and your tempted to eat something you know you shouldn't...reach out to us we are there to help you, you're not alone!!! Remember what my coach said, "the best potential of ME is WE"... let us help you reach your best potential.
I personally want to thank you for choosing to be a part of our team!! We are always looking for new members to join this great team and achieve success. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions to help you and if you know of anyone who wants to join this great team...I have openings for one on ones, tandems and groups!!! You want to be on a winning team...come to His and Her Fitness!!! Let's have a winning season together!!!
