Dear USRL Member,
We regret to inform you that, due to his health, His Eminence, Metropolitan Yurij has given his Notice of Retirement to take effect by July 10, 2021. Please click on the image of the letter below to read the Metropolitan's letter which was received by the Chancellor and Chair of Presidium, Very Rev. Fr. Taras Udod.
Metropolitan Yurij has provided a significant leadership role during a critical period in the history of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada (UOCC) and in Ukraine.
I recall our trips to the Phanar regarding the question of Autocephaly for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. When some of the Metropolitans on the Patriarchal Synod External Relations Committee questioned the reason for autocephaly, Metropolitan Yurij gave a passionate detailed history that was extremely comprehensive encompassing Canon Law. After 20 minutes, when His Eminence was finished, there was stunned silence. It was clear that his presentation influenced those present; later, they confessed that their hearts and minds had been moved. On our second visit, these same Metropolitans greeted us with tremendous warmth and affection.
Let no one doubt that these visits paved the road for Autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Our UOCC advocacy literally opened the doors to the Phanar for the delegation of what was then called the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Kyivan Patriarchate.
Another significant moment I recall is the state funeral of Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn in 2002. All of Canada watched as the then, His Grace Bishop Yurij, superbly organized and presided over the Orthodox rite of funeral that was televised nationally from Anglican Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa.
Metropolitan Yurij has always supported the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League with wise counsel and advice; he has been a stalwart supporter of St. Andrew's College and of the Institutes and Museum affiliates.
Our Ukrainian Orthodox family has been enriched and blessed by Metropolitan Yurij. We extend to him our sincerest gratitude and best wishes for good health and a continuation of His grace-filled life.
Mnohi Lita Metropolite! На Многії Літа Владико!
Dr. Petro M. Kondra, President
Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada
