Hi Neighbors,
From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizing Hispanic Americans' histories, cultures, and contributions who have positively influenced and enriched our nation for generations.
San José is home to one of the nation's top 15 largest Latino populations. The diversity of our city and region has been a pivotal part of our history and accomplishments. Nationwide, Latino community members continue to empower our culture and economy from small business owners and service workers to music, acting, the arts, and much more. I invite you to visit the San José Public Library for more information or to join any of their events throughout the month.
Lastly, I want to thank Representative Jimmy Panetta for working closely with my office and helping bring much-needed federal investment to District 8 for public safety infrastructure, environmental restoration, and the overall improvement of our quality of life.
None of this work would be possible without the combined support of our District 8 partners and neighborhood leaders. While more work remains, I am determined to continue working alongside everyone for District 8. Together, we can continue empowering neighborhoods and have a safer, cleaner community.
Best,

This funding will go towards improving water quality so that, one day, our community can enjoy a nice day out in the water (fun fact: I learned how to swim at Lake Cunningham!)

Advocating for a Cleaner and Safer Community
After almost a month and a half of being abandoned, my office was finally able to remove this blighted vehicle located in the Walgreens parking lot on White & Quimby.
Although this took way longer than it should have, I am grateful for all the messages from community members for helping me advocate for a safer & cleaner community to our City departments.

Addressing RV Concerns in our Neighborhoods
After months of effort, we’ve successfully cleaned and revitalized Sturla Drive! Addressing the oversized vehicles (RV’s) issue in our City is a challenging and complex undertaking. However, it’s important to note the positive actions in trying to improve our community. We heard from neighbors of similar RV’s throughout District 8, but I am committed to continuing to work on finding alternatives for these RV’s like safe parking sites.
A big thank you to the neighbors for your patience and continuing to report these issues to homeless concerns as well as my office. Your efforts and collaboration have made a real difference. Although there is much work ahead, I’m committed to continuing to work together to keep our streets clean and welcoming for all!

City Hall Update
Tully Road-Eastridge Business Improvement District
On September 10th, the City Council unanimously approved preliminary action to create the new Tully Road-Eastridge Business Improvement District (BID). A BID allows for the creation of a special assessment district where business owners can organize to raise funds within their designated geographic boundaries for the exclusive purpose of improving the business district. This work would not be possible without the hard work and support of local business owners from the Tully Road-Eastridge Business Association (TREBA).
Other established BID's within the City include Japantown, Willow Glen, and Downtown. Tully Road-Eastridge will be the first BID east of Highway 101. Eligible use of funds includes investment in public safety, cleanliness, marketing, and urban design among other quality-of-life improvements for customers and businesses.
In addition to the preliminary steps of assigning TREBA as the advisory board and confirming the BID boundaries, City Council also approved a recommendation I led alongside Mayor Mahan and my Council colleauges for City staff to develop a time-limited business license amnesty program. The next steps for the BID establishment will happen over the next few months including mailing of notice, public meetings, and ordinance readings. If approved, the ordinance will become law by the end of the year and the first BID advisory board actions should take place by April 2025.
