THU SEP 15: Families and children of all ages can recreate one of Frida's iconic self-portraits in an instructor-led art workshop

Last but not least, enjoy our reading lists for Hispanic Heritage Month:
A NEW HOME FOR A LIBRARY FRIEND
We had the distinct pleasure to be invited by an avid library member to the Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco Home Dedication of 20 new affordable, ownership units at 612 Jefferson Avenue.

Last week, when we received a personal letter from the homeowner, we were moved by the impact the Library has had on her life. She recalled that the first time she entered the children’s area, it brought her to tears. Aside from the beautiful colors, computers within reach, and other children around, the most beautiful thing to her was that there were books in Spanish for children who did not speak English. Whenever it was possible, she brought her kids to the Library and they were very happy. Today, her two children are university students and she thanked the city for watering that seed of knowledge. She said it is with thanks to an email from the Library that she learned of the opportunity to apply for home ownership as part of this project and how she is now able to call Redwood City home.

Congratulations to all of the new homeowners and their families and friends. We look forward to seeing you around town!
COMMUNITY ART EXHIBIT
The Downtown Library is host to a Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) art exhibit aimed at forging an inclusive community. This exhibit came from a community-wide call for artists of all ages and abilities, living or working in San Mateo County, California.

Four artists are exhibiting their wide-ranging, thought-provoking and engaging artwork:

  • Elizabeth Gomez is a professional artist whose art searches for images that convey a somewhat utopic coexistence between humans (usually women) and their environment.
  • Manuel Ortiz is a sociologist, visual journalist, and professor whose photographs focus on the migrant essential workers in San Mateo County.
  • Maria Sanchez has been creating art for over 25 years and is an advocate for art as therapy. Her painting style is intuitive, primitive, and contemporary.
  • Laurie Satizabal is a graphic designer and illustrator influenced by organic shapes, mostly from different types of plants.

Visit the Downtown Library to view the art, some of which is for sale!
