Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us!

Occuring September 15th - October 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the culture, history, and contributions of Americans whose roots are tied to Mexico, Central and South America, Spain, and the Caribbean. Started by President Johnson and expanded by President Reagan, Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law in 1988. It started out as Hispanic Heritage week as part of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and evolved into a month-long celebration of America's largest ethnic minority.

For the rest of the month, see traditional Mexican clothing on display at the museum. These three outfits are in part from the collection of Maria Teresa Jaimes Guerrero. Great granddaughter of P.C Warner, Maria was interested in all things beautiful and loved wearing traditional Mexican clothing for special occasions and family celebrations. The 1950’s velvet skirt is an item that was very popular at that time and made in Mexico. Many of these beautiful one-of-a-kind works of art have not survived the ravages of time due to the fragility of paint on velvet and hand-sewn sequin work. The Maria Teresa Jaimes Guerrero collection is on loan from Annie Jaimes.

Reception for Andrea on October 12th

The reception is at PCHM on October 12th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Follow Andrea's journey to Florence here.

Andrea Franzoni, the grandson of an Italian POW at Camp Florence, is riding his bicycle from Seattle to Florence to honor his grandfather's journey among the various POW camps he was held at during World War II. Andrea is from Italy and has never been to the USA before. Not able to revisit those sites by train with his grandfather before he died, Andrea has taken on the journey alone on his bicycle.

PCHM has POW Camp remembrances, camp newspapers, photos, and interviews in our archives. Our WWII display has items from Camp Florence and other wartime artifacts. PCHM's gift shop has a few good books for sale that provide information on Camp Florence. Titles include Florence by the Pinal County Historical Society and Camp Florence by an American soldier, Ralph Storm, who was an escort for the prisoners.

Join us for a public reception will be held at PCHM where you will be able to meet Andrea and enjoy a brief Q& A about his grandfather’s memories, the reasons for this trip and his experiences along the way.

Let’s give this daring bicyclist a warm welcome to Florence!
