Andrea Franzoni, the grandson of an Italian POW at Camp Florence, is riding his bicycle from Seattle to Florence to honor his grandfather's journey among the various POW camps he was held at during World War II. Andrea is from Italy and has never been to the USA before. Not able to revisit those sites by train with his grandfather before he died, Andrea has taken on the journey alone on his bicycle.
PCHM has POW Camp remembrances, camp newspapers, photos, and interviews in our archives. Our WWII display has items from Camp Florence and other wartime artifacts. PCHM's gift shop has a few good books for sale that provide information on Camp Florence. Titles include Florence by the Pinal County Historical Society and Camp Florence by an American soldier, Ralph Storm, who was an escort for the prisoners.
Join us for a public reception will be held at PCHM where you will be able to meet Andrea and enjoy a brief Q& A about his grandfather’s memories, the reasons for this trip and his experiences along the way.
Let’s give this daring bicyclist a warm welcome to Florence!
