HPS Hosts Another Speaker Series

On August 18, 2023, we hosted the fourth installment of our Leadership Speaker Series! This fantastic event served as an intimate conversation with Alex O. Romero, moderated by Ed Rivera. Both Mr. Romero and Mr. Rivera, now retired, are founders of HPS!

In this powerful conversation, Mr. Romero and Mr. Rivera discussed topics such as remaining unapologetically committed to the mission of HPS, harnessing the power of our community to create change, the future outlook for Hispanics/Latinos in the United States, and much more.

Local Engineer, Dr. Sal Rodriguez named Scientist of the Year

Sandia National Laboratories Nuclear Engineer, Dr. Sal Rodriguez, named the 2023 HENAAC Scientist of the year for his significant impact on the STEM industry and the country. (Photo by Lonnie Anderson, Sandia National Laboratories)

From the Sandia National Laboratories New Release - September 13, 2023:

“I was the only farm worker who had a calculus book in his car,” joked Sal Rodriguez when I asked him about his upbringing.

But it was no joke. The son of immigrants, who grew up in the tiny town of Calexico, California, worked in the fields to put himself through college.

“My dad instilled in us a work ethic and my mom always believed in education,” Rodriguez said. “They wanted us to get good grades and that is what I did.”

But Rodriguez went far beyond just getting good grades. He earned three master’s degrees and two doctorates, has 240 publications to his name along with multiple patents and copyrights and has earned countless accolades in his nearly 30-year career at Sandia National Laboratories. However, the latest award has left him a bit speechless.
