Historic Sermon Center:
Former Power Plant Radiates a New Energy
Built in 1932 to provide light and power to the growing city of Independence, Missouri, the Roger T. Sermon Community Center is the place to go for social activities and fitness opportunities. Named after the longest serving mayor — Sermon was in office from 1924 to 1950 — the community center has seen some healthy changes in recent years.

First in 2013, it was revitalized with the addition of a fitness center with new weights, cardio equipment, and a circuit training room. Then in 2018, all of the original oversized Palladium-style windows were replaced. WINCO's 3250 Steel Replica Windows were selected for the project since they could be customized to recreate the classical styling.

"At first goal was to restore the original windows. Unfortunately that wasn't feasible and would have cost more than new windows," said Craig Lytle at the Wilson Group, who managed the window installation. “WINCO's 3250 Steel Rep windows were nearly an exact match that outperformed the originals, both in frame durability and thermal performance, while giving this historic building the face lift it deserved."

With its two meeting rooms, gymnasium, lobby area, theatre, and multitude of fitness classes, the center is enjoyed by the citizens of Independence for a variety of activities. With the new Palladium-style WINCO windows in place, the Roger T. Sermon Community Center radiates beauty both inside and out.
