Greetings!
After many long days and nights at the State House, the Legislature wrapped up its work for 2023! We accomplished a great deal, namely passage of a historic budget that addresses some of our most pressing challenges and makes long-term investments in our people – all while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Most importantly, this legislation will make it easier for more folks to make ends meet.
Child care is an issue impacting most every Maine family as households struggle to work sometimes two or more jobs while juggling the care for their children. Our budget takes significant steps to improve the current lack of available and affordable child care, by investing more than $35 million to double the wage stipend for child care workers while expanding eligibility for assistance to more families – a major boost for our economy.
Additionally, our budget funds the creation of a new paid family and medical leave program, so Mainers will no longer have to choose between a paycheck and caring for themselves or a loved one in need. It funds a new, refundable child tax credit, enabling more families to pay their bills while lowering the rates of food insecurity and child poverty. And it expands property tax relief through the Property Tax Deferral Program and the Property Tax Fairness Credit, helping more Mainers – and particularly, those 65 and older – stay in their homes and age with dignity.
Collectively, these investments make clear what Maine values – our families and our communities. This budget will have a profoundly positive impact on our state. I remain committed to continuing my work to protect our environment, to ensure Mainers have access to affordable mental health and oral health care and that children are protected from abuse.

ADDITIONAL LEGISLATIVE UPDATES
|
|
I am so pleased to share that a number of bills that I proposed this year are now law!
-
LD 239, which was an idea promoted by the 5th graders at Loranger Memorial School. Two students contacted me last fall with this idea, resulting in the creation of the first Maine State Butterfly. They joined us for the bill signing with Gov. Mills (photo below)!

|
-
LD 478, An Act to Improve Sand Dune Restoration, which is now law, continues my work and commitment to protecting our most precious resources - our lovely beach and coastline.
-
LD 847 illustrates my ongoing commitment to provide tools and trauma-informed resources for law enforcement throughout Maine. As a social worker, I am committed to policies, like this one, that will help to address our broken mental health care system.
-
LD 1246 was one of the most significant pieces of legislation passed to protect habitat and endangered species in the State of Maine. Working in a bipartisan manner with both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Inland Fisheries, we were able to ensure safeguards for our environment. I was honored to join Gov. Mills when she signed the bill:

-
LD 1248 is a continuation of my efforts to both protect our most precious natural resource - our water - while also ensuring that bottled water is safe and free from PFAS contamination.
-
LD 1362 provides added protections to survivors of sexual abuse and assault. I will continue my advocacy on behalf of survivors and my work to protect children from abuse. I was honored to join Gov. Mills when she signed the bill:

STAY SAFE DURING HEAT WAVES
|
|
This summer, we have seen some of the hottest days on record both nationally and in Maine. While it may feel like our fine summer days are waning, the heat can continue to be a real issue for folks.
Extreme temperatures from heat waves can cause power outages and heat-related illness. Check out the Maine CDC’s guide for tips on how to help keep yourself, your family and your home safe and cool this summer.
When the next heat wave arrives, you can also click this link to find a list of cooling centers open to the public.
