Family Enterprise Entertainment
August 2022
Dear Global Family Enterprise Community,

New York has a rich history of theater, parks, museums, and family businesses! This month's Family Enterprise Entertainment highlights three historical businesses: two family-owned and operated restaurants and one family-run candy store.

(321 W 46th St, New York, NY 10036)

Located in the New York Theater District, Barbetta restaurant was founded in 1906 by Sebastiano Maioglio and is currently managed by his daughter, Laura Maioglio. Barbetta is the oldest family-founded and operated restaurant in New York City. So next time you're out to the theater, we recommend dropping by Barbetta to enjoy their traditional Piemonte dishes or a quick cocktail in their garden area.
(13 Doyers St, New York, NY 10013)

This historical 90-year-old tea parlor has had the privilege of being owned by two different families. In 1940 the Choy family were the first known owners, then in 1974, Ed Choy sold the lease to his long-time employee Wally Tang, and the current owner is Wally Tang's nephew, Wilson Tang. Chinatown and its residents have changed over the years, but Nam Wah has stayed true to its original aesthetic and values.
(108 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002)

Economy Candy, a third-generation family-operated business, was originally a repair shop that sold candies in front of the store. When the Depression hit, candy was what consumers wanted, and thus Economy Candy was established. WWII veterans, Morris "Moishe" Cohen and his brother-in-law took over the business and managed it alongside Morris's Family. Morris's son, Jerry, operated the store until 2013, then Mitchell Cohen and his wife took over.
