The stories we bring you this week are uniquely connected, yet they represent a broad range of experiences included in scope of industrial and cultural heritage.

Both stories examine aspects of the Black experience in the region—one through the lens of industry, and the other through the lens of culture. Both are stories of strength. In overcoming challenges, the lives of these two individuals reflect how they created positive change in the world around them.

Our featured story, by Interpretive Specialist Ryan Henderson, shares the history of Black ironworkers at the Carrie Furnaces and in the steel industry through the life story of former ironworker and union organizer, John Hughey.

Also included is the second article in our Heritage Highlights series, an interview with Akasha Van Cartier, a drag queen who has been a feature in the Pittsburgh scene for the last two decades.
