Kansas Day 2022
Looking for ways to celebrate Kansas' upcoming birthday?
Whether you are teaching preschool or high school, we have something to make your Kansas Day celebration special, unique, and educational at our resource page Kansas Day in the Classroom. A variety of materials have been assembled including make and take activities, videos, lesson plans, games, resource materials, and much more. All of these are available at Kansas Day in the Classroom and all can be used in your classroom at your convenience.
State symbols are a great way to learn about Kansas. They help provide Kansans with a sense of place and identity. Symbols are things that have come to represent Kansas over time. Students can sing “Home on the Range” with Cowboy Trae and then learn about the song’s history in a standards based lesson. Resources and activities exploring a wide variety of other symbols are also available.
Join Kansas students from across the state in reading the well-known children’s book S is for Sunflower: A Kansas Alphabet written by Kansans Devin and Corey Scillian and Illustrated by Doug Bowles. This video reading was created through a partnership with the Kansas Historical Society, the Kansas State Department of Education, Kansas Tourism, elementary schools from across the state, and with permission from Sleeping Bear Press/Cherry Lake Publishing Group.
Kansas Day is a great time to teach students about state government and the Capitol. Climb the 296 steps to the top of the Capitol in this Capitol dome video tour, listen to the story of John Brown as you explore the “Tragic Prelude” mural, or see the Senate and House chambers, all from the comfort of your classroom. Standards based lessons introduce students to the Kansas constitution and state government. These resources, and more, are waiting for you to explore.
Kansas Day Edventure is a virtual field trip experience featuring live tours from the Kansas Museum of History, a walking tour of the Kansas Capitol, an introduction to an upcoming archeological study at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, a visit to Cheyenne Bottoms Kansas Wetlands, and much more.
Think of Kansas Day Edventure as a virtual one day conference designed for PK-12 students. Most sessions are thirty minutes or less and recorded so that classrooms unable to attend a live session can access them on demand the next day. Edventure is designed and offered by the Wichita Public Schools, but all classrooms from anywhere, and any district, are welcome to join in.
