Karen said, "You Did What?"

"Uh, I volunteered our home for Covington Heritage Foundation's annual History and Holly Home Tour."
(long, silent pause)
"Should I have checked with you first?"

Changing Climate, Changing Landscape, and Evolving Thought: Flood Mitigation in a Changing World
On November 18th at 2:00pm, a panel of experts will discuss how traditional approaches to flood risk and storm water management may no longer be appropriate, how New Orleans is innovating storm water management practices and technologies, the reimagining of flood risk policy, practices, and implementation in Houston and how to mitigate flood risk at the parcel and neighborhood level.
This discussion will be held online and is free. Upon inquiring, I learned the event is open to the public. Hence, I invite anyone interested in flood mitigation to sit in on this two hour panel discussion on flood mitigation. Click Here to Register

Per CLECO, 40 replacement light heads and arm brackets came to Covington last week. This is nowhere near the total number of lights needed to be replaced, but supply chain issues have them constrained.
We have submitted a list of outages compiled by our Fire Department.
CLECO's linemen are working extra hours and weekends when they do get replacement lights.
Personal observation: It will be quite some time before all lights are repaired.

Much of our tree canopy is aging. As we knew and confirmed with Ida, water oaks and lone pine trees can be hazardous. With this in mind, earlier this year I asked our Tree Board (yes, we have a tree board) to compile a list of trees suitable for planting. The overall arching idea is "what do we wish out tree canopy to look like in 50 years?" Below are recommendations for both large and small trees.
Large Trees
American Beech, Fagus grandifolia
Black Gum, Nyssa silvatica
Cypress – Bald, Taxodium distichum
Pond, Taxodium ascendens
Elm – American, Ulmus americana
Winged, Ulmus alata
Holly – American, Ilex opaca
Magnolia – Cucumber, Magnolia acuminata
Southern, Magnolia grandiflora
Maple - Southern Sugar, Acer saccharum floridanum
Swamp Red, Acer rubrum ‘Drummondii’
Oaks – Cow, Quercus michauxii, Nuttall, Q. nuttallii, Shumard, Q. shumardii,
Southern Live, Q. virginiana, White, Q. alba, Willow, Q. phellos
Sweetgum, Liquidambar styraciflua
Tulip Tree, Liriodendron tulipifera

Cherry Laurel, Prunus caroliniana

Harvey's House
Right Next to the Majestic Theater
In 1926 Sid Fuhrmann opened the Majestic Theater. The show featured those new-fangled "talkie" movies. One gentleman shared with me that as a child he and his friends would block the blades to the large box fan on the back of the building. Once the movie started, they would crawl through the blades and "save that nickel." We knew that gentleman as the late, great Coach Jack Salter.
Tucked away next to the Majestic was a roller rink and concession stand called Harvey's House. One lady shared with me that Mr. Harvey was always very nice. She also said she frequented Harvey's House for the purpose of meeting boys. She is now my mother-in-law.
