The end of the first Session of the 152nd General Assembly adjourned this past Friday. Several bills that were priorities of the State Chamber and the business community at-large were enacted. View Tyler Micik's recap here.
The last day of Session also marked the end of Speaker Pete Schwarzkopf’s tenure as Speaker of the House. Pete will continue to serve his constituents throughout the remainder of this year and 2024. Every now and again, the public is quite fortunate to have lifelong servant leaders in their midst. Pete Schwarzkopf—the lifeguard, police officer, spouse, father, friend, and so much more—served with distinction. His professionalism and willingness to consider a wide array of viewpoints has served Delawareans well. We thank him for his role both representing his beach area district and serving as the leader of the House of Representatives.
The day also marked a milestone in Delaware history as Representative Valarie Longhurst assumed the role as Speaker. We admire the straightforward way she expresses her views and look forward to her leadership—not only as the first woman to assume the role as Speaker of the House but as a dedicated public servant who simply wants the best for all Delawareans.
Val is now joined by Representative Melissa Minor-Brown as she moves up to House Majority Leader, and Representative Kerri Evelyn Harris who takes on the role of Majority Whip. A House majority leadership team of three women is another historical first in the First State!
