AUGUST 2022 NEWS & EVENTS
A History of the Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone has featured prominently throughout the history of jazz. The saxophone family includes up to 9 members of varying high and low ranges, valuable in the context of jazz. In the1920s, saxophones had gained prominence around the country through touring military and brass bands. Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young especially cemented the tenor saxophone’s importance as well as its flexibility, and from there it has only grown. UNC Charlotte's Dr. Kelsey Klotz offers us a brief snapshot of that path this month.

JazzArts Youth Fall Ensembles
Begins September 25
Did you watch our jazz students blossom over the week of summer camp? Imagine what they can do in a full semester!

This applied program is open to middle and high school students who want to continue improving their individual skills within the context of a small jazz ensemble. The 12-week (2-3 hour) sessions provide students the opportunity to grow their individual skills within a supportive and relaxed ensemble environment, with a concentration on exploring jazz styles, standard repertoire, jazz improvisation, and history.
JazzArts Latin Jazz Youth Ensembles
Begins October 5
JazzArts Charlotte begins its second season of the new Nuestro Tiempo Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble!

Led by renowned Latin Jazz educators, students will play repertoire in a Latin Jazz orchestra and learn fundamentals including clave rhythms, improvisational theory, Latin Jazz history and stage presence. This is a unique opportunity for student musicians grades 7-12 to study an exciting facet of jazz that combines the chords and improvisational techniques of traditional jazz with the Latin instruments and rhythms.

Woodwinds, Brass, Rhythm Section, and Percussion Players with a minimum 1 year on your instrument are encouraged to join.

Auditions will be held September 24. We are able to offer all accepted students a scholarship to cover the cost of participation.
With your help, students can pursue their talents
Thank you for your generous support during Shop for Good. We are grateful for the purchases given through our Amazon Smiles Wish List. But there are still items needed to kick off our Fall programs!

For music education, our students' desks tend to take the form of drum sets, upright basses, and music stands. Participation often requires a microphone and amplifier. Will you consider making a gift of any amount today? Your support can help launch our Fall programs with the instruments and tools our students need to pursue their talents.

Thank you for believing in the work we do and supporting jazz education!
