Ribbon Cutting &  Community Celebration

The  twelve partner organizations  of the  Tompkins Center for History & Culture  invite the people of Tompkins County, the Finger Lakes, and New York to explore our new heritage tourism center, located on Bank Alley on the Ithaca Commons.

Join us Friday, May 10 at 5:00 PM at 110 North Tioga Street for remarks from local dignitaries and project leaders, refreshments, informal tours, and, of course, a ribbon cutting! T he Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers, Ithaca College, and Tompkins Center partner Cayuga Chamber Orchestra will perform throughout the evening. It will also be the public opening of The History Center's new exhibit hall.

The event is free o f charge and open to all.  It is made possible by a grant from the Tompkins County Tourism Program.  The first 150 guests will receive a complimentary copy of  The Towns of Tompkins County  by Jane Dieckmann, who will be present to sign books and answer questions. Our Indigenous Past and Our Gayogo̱hó:nǫ Present

This panel will focus on the atrium exhibits, "Gayogo̱hó:nǫ; We Are Still Here" and "Indigenous People and Tompkins County: 13,000 Years and Counting," as well as the stylized animation inside The History Center's exhibit hall. These were all developed in collaboration with Cayuga Nation leaders and academic colleagues. This discussion will follow the creation and curation of these narratives and designs with Debbie George (on behalf of Sachem Sam George), Kurt Jordan (Associate Professor in Anthropology and American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program at Cornell University), and Joseph Karadin (Creative Director for Tessellate Studio).

Generation to Generation Celebration
 Tuesday, June 4, 5:00 to 6:30 PM

This year, ten high school students conducted oral history interviews with restaurant/food-business owners who are immigrants to this country. Joins us to celebrate the youth historians and community members who participated in expanding the narratives in The History Center's collection of oral histories. Excerpts from the interviews will be shared.


Fly Through the Finger Lakes
 Saturday, July 13
Multiple locations throughout central New York
The History Center is excited to join with Wings of Eagles Discovery Center in Horseheads, the National Soaring Museum in Elmira, the Glenn H. Curtiss Aviation Museum in Hammondsport, and Ithaca Aviation Heritage Foundation to offer the first regional aviation tour. This full-day adventure will send buses, one departing from Hammondsport and one from Ithaca, to visit all four museums and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
