Program Description
During the Civil Rights Era, many people were struggling to find and secure their place in American society. Yet, for Indigenous Peoples, the issues of equal rights, representation, and inclusion in a nation not of their own has always been complicated because in the United States, Tribal Nations retain their inherent sovereignty and are recognized as separate governments. With the rise of the Red Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, American Indians sought to address their own concerns over their civil rights while also promoting their continuing independence. Join Kyle Pittman for a talk that will explore the motivations of the Red Power Movement as it unfolded within the context of Tribal sovereignty.
