Jennifer Watts' Sister Sarah Roberts to Speak March 21-22
Sarah Roberts, a member of Southside Presbyterian Church, Tucson, and the sister of our own
Jennifer Watts, will be visiting March 21-22 to speak at Hudson River Presbytery and Hitchcock Presbyterian Church. We'll learn first-hand about the "
New Sanctuary Movement," which is highlighted in the above video from MSNBC. To read more about Southside's ministry, click here:
http://www.southsidepresbyterian.org/uploads/1/3/2/0/13209972/sanctuary_2014-an_overview_copy.pdf
Please join us at Presbytery, Saturday morning, March 21, at the Presbyterian Church in White Plains. And plan to attend
Adult Forum, Sunday, March 22 at 9 AM, at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church!
Sarah Henkel, Cross-Cultural Catalyst for the Presbytery (
sarah@hudrivpres.org) writes:
For years now comprehensive immigration reform has been in debate. In the meantime of laws not yet passed, many lives are caught up in the broken systems of immigrant detention and deportation. In the meantime of laws not yet passed, local congregations can play a critical role of forming communities of care around congregants and community members who are undocumented.
What does that look like?
Consider sanctuaries that provide sanctuary. Come hear about the experience of Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ, providing sanctuary (protection from deportation) for a long-time member of the community who is undocumented. Sarah Roberts, a congregant from Southside, will share during the Community Conversations at the March 21st Presbytery meeting about the process of becoming a sanctuary congregation and the growing number of congregations across the country who are part of the
Sanctuary 2014 movement.

Meeting Reports

Session and Deacons Met This Week
Monday, the Session worked with energy and focus. (Jack Lohr was recovering from a red-eye return from California, and the elders were considerate.) Still, many important discussions took place. They considered a rather different affirmation of faith which Jack proposes using on May 3 (watch for it!). They developed an idea for a Session committee to work on issues of social justice, and they'll talk more about it next month. AND they adopted a $1 million dollar budget for 2015 in which income and expenditures are projected to be equal!
Wednesday, Deacons also kept to their agenda, starting after the Vespers service and accommodating Tracey Tsai who had returned late the previous day from Haiti. They continued discussions of a proposal for name tags, concentrating on the rationale that motivates the idea. They discussed possible new areas of ministry and ideas for coordinating deacons' work with other programs of the church. And they reviewed regular deacons business, including the Chilil Cook-off, weekly flower delivery and Easter Lilies, participationin the Egg-travaganza, and caring for members who can't get out to church.
If you have questions about Session, speak to Linda Camp, clerk; and for Deacons, speak to Adriana Galhardo, moderator.

Easter Memorial Flowers
|
Every year as Easter or Christmas approaches, we fill our Sanctuary with gorgeous flowers to remember loved ones and friends and to support our Memorial Fund. This is our Memorial Flowers Tradition. Easter Lilies brighten our Easter services. Poinsettias and evergreen wreathes enhance worship throughout our Christmas Season.
These Memorial Flowers are dedicated to honor beloved family members or friends who are no longer with us, but who remain very present in our thoughts and prayers. And these Memorial Flowers do so much more for our Congregation. These Memorial Flowers bring joy to the Congregation during our worship service, and after the service, the Memorial Flowers are delivered by Deacons to members of our Congregation who are unable to come to Church or who are in need of cheer or support. What better way to remember loved ones than to celebrate that love in worship at Church during the Easter and Christmas seasons? Importantly, all honorees are commemorated in the Church Bulletin and in a special Chuchwide Memorial Flowers Tradition email each season.
How can you participate? Please give us the names of your loved ones whom you wish to honor. We ask that you make a dollar gift to the Memorial Flowers Fund at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in their memory, just as you might have bought flowers for them. Please consider a range of $25 to $100 per named honoree for each season. If you wish to remember them during both of the Easter and Christmas seasons of 2015, please double your gift and indicate that in the memo line of your check. Larger donations are, of course, always welcome.
Please print legibly the names of your loved ones whom you wish to remember on a note, and write a check made payable to
Hitchcock Presbyterian Church
. The note and check should be mailed to Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, Memorial Flowers Fund, 6 Greenacres Avenue, Scarsdale, NY 10583, or placed in the Sunday offering plate. The deadline for this year's Easter bulletin is Monday, March 30.

Women's Spring Retreat at Hitchcock on April 18, 2015
|
Come to Hitchcock on Saturday April 18th from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for a retreat for ALL Hitchcock women and their friends. The Rev. Dr. Cathryn Surgenor and the Rev. Leslie Mott will lead the retreat on "Keeping Real Faith in the Real World". Cathy is the Principle Evaluator for Evaluation Builds Understanding, and Leslie is the Pastor of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Philipstown in Cold Spring, NY.
Cathy gave us insight into the retreat when she wrote, "Where does real faith meet the real world? Scientific knowledge and religious thought are meeting in ways we never dreamed possible. Our society has changed and people are finding meaning in a wide variety of ways, and not just in church. Our backgrounds and upbringing are widely varied and interfaith dialog is a necessity. We are connected via the internet and social media as never before, and we have access to a wider view where our hearts break open when we encounter the reality of people's lives all over the world. All of this is good news!
Join us for a day of exploration as we look at real faith in the real world, with:
* Creative worship
* A community of diverse and thoughtful thinkers
* Small group/individual spiritual exercises and large group discussion
* Movement and music
* Prayer and spiritual resources
* Mindfulness and yoga practices
* Artistic and creative expression
The possibilities are endless!
Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in
and join us for a day of spiritual nourishment and rejuvenation!"
This fun and restorative event is sponsored by Presbyterian Women (PW). The cost of the retreat and lunch is $45. For more information about the retreat contact Liz Perrone (723-2361 or sanoop@aol.com).

Host for Living in America
|
|
Teaching in our Living In America program is a very rewarding experience, according to all our LIA teachers. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining us. However, if time limits make that impossible, there is another way to become involved.
We are looking for hostesses who would be willing to have a group of 8 to 10 students with their teachers in for coffee one morning on either May 7 or 14.
Our students are thrilled to be inside an American home.
Please call Marge Herold, 914-761-4461, if you would like to host such a gathering. |
