"
And now let us welcome the new year, full of things that never were.

Rainer Maria Rilke
As we begin the new year, I am reflecting on the quote above. This truly will be a year full of things that have never been before, at least at Hively!
We have new programs, new clients, new staff and even a new Oakland location as of February 1st.

At the risk of dating myself, I have been a licensed therapist for over 30 years. I have seen the desperate need for mental health services that families face. I've also heard, for over a decade, how the shortage of available, affordable mental health services impact families in Alameda County.
We are very excited that as of February we are going to be able to offer play therapy for kids, individual therapy for adolescents and adults, family therapy and group therapy in our San Leandro and Pleasanton locations. We plan to begin offering similar services in our new Oakland location by summer 2020. Children and families desperately need these expanded mental health services. Through a variety of partnerships and with the full support of our board, we are excited to move forward in this new direction!
We will continue to provide all the other programs and services Hively is known for. We will just be adding these new services to our menu of offerings!

As always, we invite you to be part of our Hively community! We work every day to improve the lives of the children and families in our community. There is so much to do. Will you help us? For more information on how you can get involved, email us at hello@behively.org.

What is the Census?
Every ten years, the Census Bureau counts every adult, child, and baby living in the country to collect basic information, including age, sex, and race.
Census 2020 will NOT ask about citizenship status
. Starting in March 2020, everyone will be asked to complete the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.
Responses are confidential and are protected by law.
Why is the Census important?
The Census gives us data about our community, informs the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funding, and determines the number of decision-makers representing us. Alameda County gets billions of dollars from the federal government for essential services -- healthcare, school programs, housing, transportation, social services and more -- based solely on the census count.
An undercount means fewer resources for
everyone
.
For every person not counted, our community loses $10,000 over the next 10 years.
Hively, in partnership with the Alameda County Complete Count Committee, is working to ensure that our community will be fully counted in the 2020 Census. Click below for more information!

20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowship Breakfast
|
|
Monday, January 27th
7.30AM - 9.30AM
DoubleTree
by Hilton Pleasanton
The Pleasanton Community of Character Collaborative will be hosting the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast at the DoubleTree by Hilton Pleasanton at the Club. The event, which draws community leaders from throughout the Tri-Valley is a gathering to remember and honor the legacy of Dr. King. This year’s keynote speaker will be Kym Johnson, Executive Director of BANANAS. The inspiration for this year’s breakfast is the Martin Luther King quote,
“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well‐being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
Ms. Johnson will be speaking about care and compassion in our communities Entertainment will be provided by Pleasanton’s newly appointed teen poet laureate, Kanchan Naik.

In December Hively had so much fun distributing hundreds of toys to the families we serve every day! We couldn't have done it without the Safeway Foundation! Thanks to Christy Duncan Anderson, the Safeway Foundation partnered with Hively to collect almost a thousand toys from their employees! In addition, volunteers from Safeway staffed our Christmas Toy Shop! They helped our families shop for toys, clothes, shoes, food and lots of other household items! Our volunteer elves even helped wrap presents for all the families that visited our Toy Shop!
And, the Safeway Foundation gave Hively an amazing Christmas gift: a check for $10,000 to support our ongoing work to provide resources to families through our Community Closet and our Diaper Pantry.
Thank you, Safeway Foundation! And, special thanks to Christy Duncan Anderson!

For our Child Care Providers
|
|
California Market Rate Survey
|
|
Every two years the California Department of Education (CDE) conducts the Regional Market Rate Survey of California Child Care Providers. The results are used to establish child care reimbursement ceilings.
CDE has contracted with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) to conduct the 2020 survey administration. Currently AIR is seeking Child Care Providers to test the survey prior to full-scale implementation. Feedback from these interviews will be used to improve the survey.
