iKNow Article: IK0800202

Applies to:
BE and CE Bus Models, DuraStar, TranStar and WorkStar
Description:
The routing and clipping point for the hood harness may result in a pinch point causing intermittent operation of the headlights and hood mounted directional and park lamps. Condition is not found on all units.
Symptoms:
Intermittent failure of the headlights and hood mounted directional and park lamps.

Troubleshooting:
Visual inspection of the harness routing and clipping at the hood torsion bar area should be completed to ensure issue is not related to a pinched harness.
BE & CE Models:
The hood harness clipping point can rotate the harness between the torsion bars when the hood is closed depending on the orientation of the harness. (Figure 1) If a pinch point is found, circuits should be inspected and repaired if damage is found prior to continuing diagnostic steps. A revised routing and clipping change has been implemented. (Figure 2) Clipping the harness to the lower torsion bar reduces the possibility of the harness being forced between the upper and lower torsion bars during the hood closing process. Clean unit date for the BE and CE model is August 3, 2009.
DuraStar, TranStar and WorkStar Models:
Harness routing and lack of conduit at connector area may allow the harness to become pinched between the torsion bars. (Figure 3)
Adding 2.5” of conduit to the harness reduces to possibility of the harness rotating between the torsion bars by increasing harness stiffness. (Figure 4) In addition, the harness should be routed outboard of the torsion bars as much as possible. This repair may be applicable for bus if the condition is found.
Clean unit date for the DuraStar, TranStar and WorkStar models is March 25, 2008.
RESOLUTION
The hood harness routing, clipping and conduit should be repaired as described in the above section if repairs are required. If circuit damage has occurred, the following repair procedures should be followed. If the insulation only is damaged on a circuit, depin the circuit and slide dual wall heat shrink over the damaged insulation area and apply sufficient heat to shrink the tubing. If the circuit has broken copper strands, or evidence of corrosion in the copper strands, circuit repairs should be completed per SFN Number 06-39.
