WHERE TO NEXT?

Dear Traveler,

This is a one way road.

I don’t think it is.

It has to be. It’s so narrow.

Moments later - out of the fog comes an oncoming car.

Just a quick glance between us.

(because Jason's eyes must be locked on the road)

That was a snapshot of our drive from Dingle to Waterville, Ireland.

Although I’ve warned clients that driving yourself in Ireland is not an easy endeavor, this was my initial first-hand experience. It is not for the faint of heart.

Putting aside the treacherous idea of driving yourself, southern Ireland is a beautiful place full of charming Irish towns – one more quintessential than the next. Dingle, Adare and Kinsale are a few to put on your list.

Of course every Irish town needs good pubs. Classic pubs that ooze Irish charm, have live music and surely have a bartender straight out of central casting. We were at one called the Villa until late last night. Some of the songs were traditional Irish music, but they also catered to the American golfers in the bar, playing Sweet Caroline, Bye Bye Miss American Pie and Ring of Fire, so we all sang along.

For those who know that I don't actually play golf, you may wonder why I am on a golf trip at one of the best golf courses in Ireland.

Love.

My husband loves golf. I love our friends. I love exploring new places. And that's why I am here.

We are at a member-guest tournament. The ratio of attendees is ~ 78 men to 2 women. It is fun to get a glimpse into what a guys' golf trip is like. Last night one of the attendees came up to us at the bar and asked if we would be willing to talk with his wife to tell her how much we are enjoying ourselves. :)

You don't have to be a golfer to go on a golf trip to Ireland with your spouse. There is so much more to do. Do what we are doing and come with friends so you have someone to enjoy exploring with while the other half plays golf.

Yesterday we went on a guided tour of the peninsula seeing a famine village (fascinating history), the stunning Kerry Cliffs and the local chocolate factory. We stopped at a little fishing village for lunch and gazed out at Skellig Island, where Star Wars was filmed.

We rode bikes, went for long walks down roads lined with stone walls, hit balls in the golf simulator, read by the fire, lounged over Guinness and pints of lager and dined on fish n chips, monkfish and black sole.

This place was clearly built for a male clientele, however the design is absolutely beautiful. The spa is too. And they have their own helicopters making getting around (when the weather is good) easy, fast and fun.

What I also love is the inspiration behind the creation of this golf club. The idea of two friends with this as their tag line...

Built by Friends,

for Friends,

for Fun.

And they do an exceptional job at making that the reality. Everything is top notch - the design, the food, the service and of course the golf. I've had clients play here and they've loved it. This is Jason's third time here and I'm sure he would come back again and again. Because it's minutes from Waterville Golf Course and the helicopters can whisk you to courses a bit further away, it is an ideal spot to be.

If you have a golfer in your life and they haven't been to Ireland or Hogs Head, I recommend you plan a trip for them. Better yet a surprise gift. Although getting on the coveted courses actually must be done well over a year in advance. Sometimes two. So planning ahead is key.

THE FISH BOX & OUT OF THE BLUE

📷 Out of the Blue

The Ring of Kerry, which takes you around the Iveragh Peninsula, is the most famous drive in this part of Ireland. Having driven on it, I can attest that the views are magnificent and the towns delightful. But just north of the Iveragh Peninsula is the Dingle Peninsula and it's also worth a visit.

While there, stopping in Dingle is a must - for an overnight or just a day visit. I suggest choosing one of these two places for your meal...

Out of the Blue is the place for the freshest daily catch. We had tuna tartar, black sole, seared scallops and pan seared cod. All of it was delicious. But you won't find any fried fish.

If you are craving Irish fish and chips you must go to the Fish Box. We stopped in, saw the piles of fish and chips being brought to tables and they looked delicious!

But there was also a two hour wait.

TIP* when you arrive in Dingle, stop by to put your name in well before you are hungry. Then enjoy a walk around Dingle knowing your table will be ready just when you’ve worked up an appetite.

If you are in Dingle on a warm day, opt out of desert at your restaurant and head to Murphy’s for ice cream and a stroll on the waterfront. There are two locations just around the corner from each other and another pop up outside of town on Inch Beach.

Which flavor should you have at Murphy's?

I recommend the Dingle Sea Salt – their best selling flavor straight from the Atlantic Ocean. They make their own salt from Dingle sea water that they collect at a local beach. It's filtered and boiled down and a key ingredient in this tasty ice cream.

And if for some reason you can't make it to Dingle, you are still in 🍀 because Murphy's has ice cream shops in Dublin, Killarney, Galway and Kildare. When traveling with kids or teenagers, knowing the locations of the best ice cream and gelato shops is important information. I'll always make sure you are well informed.

Why else would you want to go to Dingle?

To...

  • learn about artisans - local leather and crystal craftsmen
  • take a sea safari in search of seals, whales, caves and a bit of adrenaline
  • surf
  • leisurely stroll about town peeking in galleries and boutiques

🌟 Our clients recently visited their son studying abroad in Madrid. They took a market and tapas tour, had a tour of the Prado and Reina Sofia museums, went shopping with a private guide and stayed at the Four Seasons Madrid.

Why is the Four Seasons Madrid so special?

  • The hotel is ideally located and within walking distance to Madrid’s attractions. Kilometer Zero is a few steps from the property and the major museums, parks and Royal Palace are all less than a twenty minute walk from your room.
  • Seven historic buildings were transformed into luxury rooms and suites. The hotel is itself a gallery - displaying 1,500 pieces of art.
  • Three unique options are available for dining and cocktails. Dani is the rooftop brasserie by Spanish celebrity chef Dani Garcia and one of the hottest tables in the city. The elegant cocktail bar Isa serves contemporary tapas with Asian influence. And El Patio is the lobby bar, perfect for evening drinks.

Do as much or as little as you like:

  • Enjoy the four-level wellness center with steam rooms, saunas and a relaxation lounge.
  • The 46 foot indoor swimming pool is surrounded by windows and flooded with natural light. Relax after your swim on the eighth floor sun terrace with views of the city.
  • The visiting physician program allows appointments with some of the world’s wellness leaders. Schedule a treatment with industry experts in reflexology, facial massage and more.

‼️ Don’t miss….head to a nearby tablao for a flamenco show or arrange ahead of time for a private flamenco lesson.

As with all Four Seasons hotels, you will get special perks and VIP treatment when we book your room. Use your credit for Nitro Tomato and Green Gazpacho and a Tinto de Verano (a favorite drink of Spaniards) on the rooftop at Dani.

(For those new to the newsletter, Jessie is our 19 year old daughter on a gap year. She spent the fall exploring Europe and is now adventuring around South America)

Jessie made it out of Colombia to Mexico. Her chosen destination for her last week before I meet up with her is Isla Holbox, an island northwest of Cancun, that has been described as the way Tulum used to be before it got inundated with celebrities and new construction.

She loves it! The mode of transportation is walking or golf carts. Even the taxis and police use golf carts.

If you've had swimming with whale sharks on your bucket list, Isla Holbox is the place to be. Peak time is July and August.

Isla Holbox is a place where you can rent a house for your family and friends or stay at a boutique hotel. The pace is slow, there are no high rises. It's laid back luxury. As with all sought after, warm weather destinations, plan ahead for peak season so you are guaranteed a room at the perfect hotel for you.
