happy new year

Hold the Page

The calendar says we are nearing a much-needed break, and like so many of you, attention is already turning to what lies ahead when the new year starts. Before totally turning that page it seems important to pause for a moment and take stock of 2022. We all receive many listserv postings from different campus and professional groups that, at times, offer food for thought among their messages. Two that recently crossed the transom, with deep connections to MSU, seemed to really resonate with the conversations I’ve been a part of over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps they will connect with you, as well.  (Read more)

Normal hasn’t been our friend: MI-ACE looks for a better normal for women and women of color

By Kate Birnbryer White

Keynote speaker and MSU Board of Trustee Member Dr. Rema Vassar, PhD, of Wayne State University, reminded attendees that “I think we kind of shifted back to wanting to hustle back to normal. But normal hasn't been our friend. Normal is comfortable, but it's not who women have been in the past, and who we need to be right now. People who are really progressive in thinking about how to make positive change recognize that this is an opportunity. This is an opportunity to shift the narrative around who we are and who we want to be.”

Reaching our Researchers:

Finding Support and Community

As MSU strives toward the goals set out in the 2030 strategic plan, in clear focus is the aim to expand MSU’s local and global impact through discovery, creativity and innovation for excellence. In large part, this goal will be reached through increased expenditures in research, with $1 billion reached by 2030, expanding our annual output by $275 million. To help continue MSU’s excellence in research innovation and output, the Office of Research and Innovation works to support and contribute to MSU’s overall research footprint while guiding, funding and coordinating research opportunities throughout the institution.

"I know I am not alone in saying that I greatly appreciate the effort and forethought placed on each lecture/interaction with our class. Though tactics evoke strong anxiety as people tend to not react well when placed on the spot; Dr. Beal ensures each student is well guided, through utilization of previous knowledge, to achieve the answer. These lectures have been (for myself personally) the best we have received thus far because he utilizes the connections between the systems, forcing us to recall material previously taught years prior. This is truly refreshing and I hope he understands how much these lectures positively impact us as students."
