Holding Onto Christmas

Father Casey

The twelve days are over. The gifts have all been opened and the cookies eaten. The nativity is packed away, the greens are ash for the garden, and the magi are headed home by another road.

But I tell you, I’m not through with Christmas.

Oh, I’m happy to say goodbye to commercial Christmas. It always arrives too early, and I’m sick of it before my family has even put up our tree.

No, I’m talking about Christmas. The Incarnation. Love in a tiny fragile body. Salvation swaddled in a mother’s arms. I’m not through with Emmanuel. I hope you aren’t, too.

Holding onto Christmas is an act of hope in a weak and weary world.

Holding onto Christmas is an act of faith in a world that seems deaf to the angels’ song of peace.

Holding onto Christmas is an act of courage in a world that is every bit as hostile to the kingdom of God as it was when the Word became flesh.

The Christmas I’m trying to hold onto isn’t the sweetly sentimental scene of so much art through the ages. It’s not a snow globe fantasy of silent serenity in which the Holy Family didn’t seem to have a care or concern. No, the Christmas I’m holding onto is ...

Faithful Departed

Charles David Hood

We invite your prayers for the repose of Charles Hood, who died on January 4. Charles and his wife, Sue, joined Transfiguration several years ago after moving back to the area from Arkansas. Charles was active in Cursillo and Kairos Prison Ministry for many years, and they served together as volunteer receptionists at the Fig. A Requiem Eucharist will be held on Monday, February 9, at 11:00am.

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him.

This Weekend & Week

Formation for Epiphany

Sages and Their Stories

On January 11, 18 and 25, three of Transfiguration’s sages, the Revs. Roper, Godwin, and Merriman, will share stories of great moments in our church’s history when the Light of Christ shined brightly in our midst. Join us this Sunday in Roper Hall at 10:15am when our featured guest will be Father Terry Roper who will help us remember the joys and struggles that shaped Transfiguration into the community we are today. This three week series will be an enlightening journey into the past that will no doubt cast light on our way forward.

New Harpsichord Dedication

At the 11:15am service on Sunday, January 11, we will dedicate our new harpsichord which was given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of J.J. Rodriguez by his wife, Susie Higgins-Rodriguez. This single-manual instrument was built by the William Dowd shop in 1980 and is in the French style with two sets of strings. Dowd was the chief pioneer of the historically-based harpsichord movement, and this is his 479th instrument. Kristin Van Cleve, violinist, and Gayane Manasjan Fullford, cellist, will join Joel Martinson in playing baroque music at both the 9:00am and 11:15am services.

Peace Post this Sunday

Join us Sunday, January 11 to write our elected officials about issues of justice related to current legislation. Many of us are deeply concerned about the people of Venezuela. The state of Texas is pursuing actions that clearly demean LGBTQ students in our high schools. And the only remaining nuclear arms agreement is about to expire. Join us in the Church Offices between 10:00am and 1:30pm, as we work together to oppose injustice and respect the dignity of every human being.

Serving Dinner at St. Jude Center

Fig Folks are invited to join us as we prepare food and serve dinner to our neighbors who are residents at St. Jude Center on the southeast corner of Coit Rd. and 635 this Tuesday, January 13 at 4:45pm. Our meal service at St. Jude is a beloved part of our Outreach Ministry at Transfiguration. To sign-up to help provide/prepare food and help serve it, click the button below. Please sign-up by January 12. Please be aware that all food must be prepared and brought to the event ready to serve as there are no kitchen facilities for preparation at the site.

Last Call for Scotland Pilgrimage

Saints of Northumbria

October 5 -13, 2026

Deadline Extended

$500 Deposit

Come with us on a spiritual journey through Northumbria this October. We will visit ancient abbeys, cathedrals, and the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne, known as the heart of early British Christianity. You’ll experience history, prayer, and beautiful scenery. There are only four spots left.

The registration deadline for the October 2026 pilgrimage to Scotland and England has been extended.

Planning for FigWorks

Collecting Items for Soup Kits

This Epiphany season, we are gathering ingredients for soup kits and snacks to support two outreach ministries. Your donations will help us make Soup Kits for families in need and Bye Bye Bags for children at Vogel Alcove. Please bring your donations to the Tower Cloister by January 25. To view our wishlist of ingredients and snack items, click the button below.

Important Upcoming Dates

Ordinations to the Priesthood

Two of Transfiguration’s own, Mark Witte and Michael Sturdy, will be ordained to the sacred order of priests this month. Mark will be ordained on January 17 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Stephenville, and Michael will be ordained on January 23 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Houston. Your prayers for them are warmly invited.

Brunch for Newcomers

Those who are new to Transfiguration or just "feeling new" are invited to join us January 18 at 12:30pm for a chance to meet fellow newcomers and learn more about life at Transfiguration. Food and refreshments will be provided. Let us know you will attend so we can reserve a spot for you.

Transfigured Nights

Music for Wind Quintet

Transfigured Nights invites you to join them Sunday, January 18 at 7:00pm to hear Willa Henigman, oboe, and her friends Helen Blackburn, flute, Phil Paglialonga, clarinet, Susan Frazier, horn, and Tom Fleming, bassoon, present a delightful evening of chamber music in the church. This year’s concert will be an opportunity to hear how the nave’s acoustic improvements allow the winds to soar throughout the space.

Spring Foyer Kickoff

It's time again for the Foyer Kickoff and Group Reveal on Sunday, February 15 at 4:00pm in Roper Hall. The Foyer Dinner Group Ministry provides a setting where Transfiguration members and returning guests get to know one another better through having meals together. This helps participants develop a sense of belonging and make friends in a small more intimate setting. Every February and August a large number of participants gather to be sorted into groups of 6 to 10 to host dinners to share in food, fun, and fellowship. Groups are assigned randomly and Foyer is one of the most popular ministries at The Fig! If you are not already part of Foyer and would like to sign up, click the button below to sign-up by February 1. If you participated in the last round of Foyer Dinners your are already included.

Children's

Chapel

In Children’s Chapel kids are able to experience scripture, prayer, song, and worship in a way they can understand and enjoy. Children are able to attend this service while parents attend the regular Sunday Holy Eucharist at 9:00am. We meet on in the Gathering Space prior to the service.

Faith Formation

Children's Formation

Wee Wonder shares God’s love with our youngest children by introducing them to God through song, action rhymes, Bible stories and responsive play. It is open to children agest 2-3.

Godly Play is a Montessori-based curriculum for children 4 years-old through 5th grade that follows the pattern of Christian worship and our church seasonal calendar. It teaches children religious language through sacred stories, parables and liturgical action, as well as enhances their spiritual experience through wonder and responsive play.

Youth Formation

Formation for our Youth (grades 6-12) takes place in the Youth Center from 10:15am - 11:15am on Sunday morning.

Crossover on Wednesdays 6:30pm is a time for our Youth (6th – 12th grade) to unwind from the stresses of growing up. The core of Crossover is Food, Faith, Fellowship, and Fun. Crossover is a dynamic group, and an excellent way to be involved and grow in the life of the Transfiguration Community.
