HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS AROUND YOU
|
|
Hallå | שלום | Hola | 你好 | سلام | Hello | こんにちは
Join the Redwood City Public Library December 13-28 in exploring holiday celebrations from around the globe. The Library is virtually highlighting nine winter holidays from the Americas to the far east countries of Persia, China and Japan.
Join us in exploring Santa Lucia, a Scandinavian holiday; Hanukkah, a Jewish celebration; Las Posadas, a Mexican Christmas tradition; Tió de Nadal, a Christmas folktale from Catalonia (Spain); Dōngzhì and Shab-e Yaldā, winter solstice celebrations from China and Persia; Christmas; Kwanzaa, an African-American celebration; and Ōmisoka, a Japanese New Year’s Eve celebration. Each virtual celebration will include a storytime, a craft and a bit of history presented by members of our community and Youth Services Librarians.
Families with children ages 3-12 can pick-up Materials Kits at our Holiday Celebrations Around You Materials Pickup drive-thru event on December 13 starting at 2:00pm. Materials Kits are distributed on a first-come first-serve basis. If you do not pick-up a Materials Kit, do not worry, a list of craft materials and stories to explore each celebration will be on our Kids Page starting December 13.
Happy Holidays!

PROJECT READ: 2020 YEAR IN REVIEW
|
|
Despite the challenges faced due to COVID 19, we have been reassured by the strength of our programs and the dedication of our learners and tutors. Since March, Project READ has shifted programming to remote learning through video platforms.
With the support of our dedicated volunteers, we have continued to serve youth, adults and families in the Redwood City community, helping to improve literacy and learning skills through one-on-one tutoring, small group programs and family enrichment activities. Through video platforms, we have served over 100 adults, 175 K-12 students and over 100 families. We secure and distribute devices, hotspots and internet plans to our families in this new phase of tutoring.
Additionally, each week we distribute materials to students and tutors, as well as give away weekly Family Literacy Bags that include a book that will be read during our virtual Book Club, school and art supplies to keep students engaged and connected throughout the week. To help combat the effects of poverty on learning, we partner with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley to provide fresh produce to our families each week; we’ve distributed over 8,500 bags of food during this pandemic.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, with the help of a generous volunteer and donor, we were able to give away 100 gift cards to families to purchase turkeys, 75 pies and over 100 bags of produce for our families’ Thanksgiving meals. It is during times like these, we realize how connected we truly are.
