December 2nd the Thirsty Hippo will serve up a night of jazz in the holiday spirit. Jingle Bell Jazz was a student created event once held in the restaurant area known as Seymour's in the HUB. the original Southern Miss Jazz Sextet (now Jazztet) pulled together some jazz arrangements of Christmas melodies and an annual event was born. For the first three years it was just the Jazztet, but later big band selections were added and it became an event reflecting the out put of the jazz program as a whole. This year's event has one more addition to it with Jazz Lab Band 2 joining in the festivities. "We've gatherer more music this year including a Tito Puente hommage rendition of Jingle Bells sandwiched into his mambo hit, "Ran, Kan, Kan" along with arrangements by John Mahoney, John LaBarbera, Oliver Nelson, and Bob Curnow. It promises to be fun and there is something for everyone including our perennial favorite, a second line rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy."
