Last week's trip to Canada also meant visiting my sister, who lives 200 miles north of Vancouver. My sister has pulmonary fibrosis, and she has home care workers 4 times a day, all part of the Canadian medical system. When the workers are not with her, there is a revolving crew of my nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and their assorted offspring. On my last evening there, my niece came with her 8-year-old granddaughter, Addie.
"What's your name?" she asked. I replied that I was her great-great aunt Kim.
"Well, I don't know all my aunts," she replied, "just the ones that live close."
"Come over here and help me trap a kitten," she directed. My sister has a feral cat and three kittens under the porch, and one of Addie's cousins wanted a kitten. She instructed me multiple times to stand here, then stand there as she was going to chase the kitten out into a box I was holding. I got a poor performance review for following instructions. Finally, we retreated inside to let the cats settle down. 5 Minutes later, Addie sneaks a peek out the window to see if the cats have returned to their food; she gasps, puts her hands on her hips, and yells, "that bitch of a raccoon is back," then pulls the door open. I arrive in time to see cats, cat food, and a portly raccoon scatter into the dark abyss of night. The kid will do just fine in life.
My dad's side of the family is populated with strong, opinionated women and easygoing
men whose children learn to swear before kindergarten; my mom's side was more good Baptist women trying to submit to husbands, raising children who were threatened with their mouths being rinsed with soap should they swear. It's been a fascinating study, yet there are similarities at their cores. Take care of your immediate family, if they are okay, see if anyone in your extended family needs a hand. If they are okay, is there someone in your community that needs something, or is there something your community needs? And if you can lend a hand, why wouldn't you?
Both sides have some dickheads and difficult individuals. Both sides have good people, honest people, caring people. Whenever the clans met, we gave each space. I'm sure the women on Dad's side of the family were looking at the others' husbands thinking WTF, while the mothers on mom's side watched their cleanly dressed offspring tear around with profanity-spouting heathens thinking the Biblical equivalent of WTF. Yet the center held because they could still see the goodness and humanity in each other. Kamala Harris is trying to build a large enough tent for some of the moderate Republicans, and I hope she is successful. I am not a fan of the extreme right, and I am not a fan of the extreme woke left. I hope enough people can find a way to chart a new way forward.
Have a great week.
Kim

The Widow Clicquot on Amazon Prime
A biopic of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, the widow who inherited and revolutionized the champagne industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The film explores her creative process and business challenges.
A fascinating look at another woman who survived the men of her time. She is worth celebrating.
