When the curtain rises, professionally trained Eastern CT Ballet dancers and guest artists from NYC Ballet share the spotlight in this nautical-themed live performance of The Nutcracker. Set in New London in the 1850s, the scenery celebrates SE CT's seafaring past and transforms the stage into a wintry day in the whaling city. Stage sets display tall ships in port, New London Custom House, Whale Oil Row, lighthouses, and a sea captain’s Victorian home.

Kwanzaa - Lighting of the Kinara

The City of New London and the New London NAACP invites all to a ceremony to light the Kinara for the first night of Kwanzaa. The word kinara is a Swahili word that means candle holder. The seven candles represent the Seven Principles (or Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa. Red, green, and black are the symbolic colors of the holiday. During the week of Kwanzaa, a new candle is lit on the kinara each day.
