Greetings Friends,

As we embrace the holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to extend my warm wishes to you and your loved ones. In reflecting upon the past year, it feels as though it has passed by quickly. Already the first snow has fallen and the plans and hopes of a new year are just around the corner.

With every new year, there is always great anticipation for what is next, what goals to set, and what tasks to accomplish. I hope this year to set a new goal; one that allows us to embrace the quieter moments, enjoy the company of others, and relish in the moments of connection and strength that come from supporting one another.

2024 will bring great things for ASDR, and our clients remain the focus of our work. As we strive to achieve accreditation, I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors. I am also grateful to our clients. Your resilience, wisdom, and enduring spirit inspire us each day, and we are honoured to share this journey with you.

As this year comes to a close, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support. May you all enjoy a peaceful and joyful holiday season and New Year filled with hope and moments of connection.

Caring for someone living with dementia can be a challenging, emotional, and stressful journey. One of the many care partners we support has graciously shared their story to help others learn more about being a caregiver and to share the impact the Alzheimer Society can have.

ASDR ensures care partners like Bill, have access to the resources and programs they need to provide the best care possible and to ensure they feel supported. Some of the ways we help includes:

  • Support groups to connect caregivers with others facing a similar experience.
  • Recreation programs that offer a respite opportunity to help ease feelings of caregiver burnout.
  • Help with getting a diagnosis and navigating the health care system.
  • Education to learn about the disease, its progression, and what to expect.

Help us continue to provide support to caregivers by making a donation today.

January is Alzheimer's Awareness month and to help raise awareness for those in our community living with dementia, local restaurants are participating in Dining for Dementia. During the month of January, participating restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region. Funds raised will help provide:

  • Counselling, support groups and social recreation programs for people living with dementia and their families.
  • Education and training for health care professionals, local businesses, and the community to help make Durham Region more dementia-friendly.
