Public Comment Period on Comp Plan Extended to January 10
|
|
DCCA along with other civic groups and ANCs (although notably not our own ANC2B) asked for an extension on the comment period for the Comp Plan.
We are pleased that the DC Office of Planning
announced that the public will now have until Friday, January 10, 2020
to review the Comprehensive Plan Draft Update (Comp Plan). In addition to extending the 60-day public review period, the Office of Planning will now accept feedback from ANCs through February 14, 2020.
The news release from the DC Office of Planning can be found

The full plan can be found

The results are in -- a recent Washington Post poll concludes that friendly neighbors are everywhere. An overwhelming 82 percent majority of Washingtonians describe the friendliness of their neighborhoods as “good” or even “excellent,” according to a
Washington Post poll conducted last month,
that includes
Wards 2 and 3, where 90 percent of residents rate their neighbors as friendly.
This serves as a nice reminder to enter 2020 with kindness and a smile to all our neighbors.

Kudos to the DCCA Garden Team
|
|
On a brilliant mid-December morning, members of the DCCA garden committee gathered at T Street Park to plant a flowering dogwood tree.
It will provide cooling, beauty, and food for wildlife. It produces white blossoms in the spring, colorful red and purple leaves in the fall, and, importantly, clusters of red berries in late fall that feed many species of songbirds, esp. the robin, cedar waxwing, and cardinal.
Some fun facts:
- The roots of the dogwood were used by Native Americans to treat malaria; and when supplies of quinine ran low in the Civil War, dogwood extract was administered as a substitute.
- The hard wood and fine grain made it ideal for tools needed by the early European settlers: kitchen utensils, gristmill cog teeth, horse collars, pulleys, and mallets.
- The color of the branches can change according to the light—they appear crimson in direct sunlight, but change to lime green color when viewed in the shade.

The day was perfect, and the stars were aligned, for a favorable start for our dogwood. With luck and some attentive care, we and the birds and pollinators will get to enjoy it for many years to come.
Thank you DCCA Garden team for your work and care and for sharing this lovely write up. DCCA welcomes volunteers to help maintain the beauty of our neighborhood parks. To join our list and help out with much needed watering, planting, pruning, mulching, raking, and weeding click

DCRA Launches Net-Zero Energy Program
|
|
A net-zero energy (NZE) building is an extremely energy efficient building that is designed and operated to produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of the year.
The new program is open to all building types, but the complete incentive package is primarily for residential and small commercial buildings ($10,000 incentive from DCSEU). DCRA describes the program as hands on and encourages you to visit the
website
