It’s well-known that volunteers can make a big difference in the lives of those in need, but did you know volunteering can change your life, including extending it?

A Longitudinal Study of Aging found that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates than those who do not, even when controlling for age, gender, and physical health. And in addition to living longer, volunteers that are 65 and older also experience lower rates of depression and anxiety1, allowing folks to truly make the most of their golden years! Volunteering can also bring peace and clarity when considering some of life’s biggest questions like what’s my purpose and how do I find meaning?

Volunteering allows you to be a part of something bigger than yourself and makes helping others a part of your identity. You’re a person who gives back. You’re a person who believes in hope. You’re a person who believes in others.

It’s also a wonderfully easy way to make new friends and strengthen existing friendships by volunteering together (or if you’d prefer to fly solo, we can make that happen!). Volunteers are essential to helping Partners in Housing families achieve stable housing and self-sufficiency and we thank each and every one of our past and current volunteers for their immeasurable efforts. We are excited to celebrate with you in April for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration!

If you’d like to join our volunteer team and attend the April celebration, please check out our opportunities below and call or email Jillian at (719) 325-5830 or [email protected]. Additionally, if you have a special skill or have other ideas on how to give back, please let us know! We would love to hear from you!

Holiday Highlights!

The 2022 holiday season was a resounding success, and we want to give a very special thank you to every incredible donor and volunteer that made it possible for Partners in Housing families to celebrate the holidays in a meaningful way! To everyone who gave gifts, gift cards, food, time, and/or money, we thank you! Here are a few highlights of the 2022 holiday season:

  • Four extraordinary donors provided Thanksgiving sides for every family in the Partners in Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

  • Three craft fairs and one car show were held this fall, with proceeds going toward gifts for children in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

  • Generous individuals and groups donated over 700 new gifts for children and parents!

  • Instead of purchasing Christmas gifts for each other, an outstanding family shopped for and donated high-need items, including 13 crockpots, 4 Swiffers, and many, many cleaning items!

  • Colorado House received a very special visit from Santa himself (along with a few hard-working elves!). Families had the opportunity to share cookies with Santa and take photos.

  • 30 all-star volunteers took time out of their busy holiday season to volunteer at our Holiday Shopping Event! These volunteers helped children and adults select the perfect gifts for their family and gift wrapped each gift with care.

  • Thanks to a successful gift card drive, each of the 68 families in the program received gift cards to stores such as Target, Walmart, and Safeway. This allowed families to prioritize their specific needs during the holiday season.

Again, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the holiday season brighter for families in housing crisis and lived out one of our core beliefs, “neighbors helping neighbors”!

Good transportation makes the road to

self-sufficiency smoother!

Thanks to the generosity of an extraordinary Partners in Housing donor, a family received a car this fall!

For Klara*, receiving a car meant freedom from her controlling ex-partner. The car she previously used was in her ex’s name and became a way for him to maintain control over her. On top of that, it needed extensive repairs and was not safe to drive. Receiving a car that is truly hers has been an important step on Klara’s journey to independence. Since receiving the donated car, Klara can safely transport her children to activities and access basic necessities such as groceries.
