Do's & Don'ts for a Happy Holiday with Your Pet
The turkey is on the table, places are set, and the feast is about to begin! Here is how to keep your pets safe during holiday meals:

Don't give in to begging!
Those big ol' puppy eyes and tiny meows might tempt you, but you should not feed your pet table scraps! Consumption of fatty foods such as turkey, butter, and gravies can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain triggered by pancreatitis inflammation. Foods containing dough and yeast can also cause painful gas or even be poisonous when ingested, and corn cobs or discarded turkey bones can result in gastrointestinal injuries.

Do prepare your pet their very own turkey dinner.
Want your pets to join in on the fun of festive feasts? Many brands offer turkey and pumpkin-flavored food that your pet can enjoy without experiencing a tummy ache. Try feeding them seasonal flavored pet food to include your furry friends in on the fun!

Adorable Adoptables
Meet Indy!
Indy is an adorable black and white tuxedo cat who is about 13 years old. This sweet senior lady is a total cuddle bug! The instant you start petting her, Indy will flop over onto her back and start making air-biscuits while you scratch behind her ears. She loves being with people and will greet you with a happy "meow" each evening when you come home. Despite being a senior gal, Indy still loves playing with toys and enjoys having a tall cat tree to perch on and watch the birds out the window. If Indy seems like she could be the perfect match for you, stop by and visit her during adoption hours!
Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Josh Mcgilligan!
Josh Mcgilligan began his volunteer journey with us just over two and half years ago and has been a faithful friend to the dogs in our care ever since. He has clocked 750 hours in that time, and 570 of those hours have been within this year alone. The words selfless, compassionate, and tenderhearted would be accurate to describe Josh. However, they don't even scratch the surface in identifying the true value his service has brought to our volunteer team or the canine population here.

Josh was initially drawn to KHS with an eagerness to serve his community and has felt a deep reward for the four-legged lives he has been able to help during his time here. He shared that the most rewarding part of volunteering here is knowing how big of an impact his time has been on the dogs he cares for and says that "seeing them finally adopted to a good home is a great reminder that what we do here is life-changing for the dogs and their new family."

As one of our newest Lead Canine volunteers, Josh shepherds his fellow teammates daily on dog walking shifts in addition to mentoring brand-new folks joining the program.
His special talent is connecting with our shy doggie residents, to gain their trust and build up their confidence.

When asked what he wished others knew about volunteering, he said "working with homeless animals can be emotional at times, but it's worth it to realize that you've helped to improve or even save lives through volunteer work at KHS".

If our doggies could, they would certainly give Josh a round of o'paws!
Employee Spotlight
Meet Courtney Hood!
Say "hi" to Courtney, our Executive Assistant! Courtney is celebrating one year with KHS this month, and what an incredible year it has been! Courtney has brought a light to our administrative team and is always there to help her colleagues.

As an Executive Assistant, Courtney wears many different hats! She supports our Executive Director and leadership team as well as our Board of Directors in various ways. She's a cheerful greeter to many who stop by our Administrative building, event planner extraordinaire, and she also assists our finance department!

Courtney often shows her passion for animals by playing a big part in caring for the dogs that get kennel breaks in our administrative offices. But that's not all; she also has a furry family of her own, including two pups and a cat!

She shares, "My favorite part of working at KHS is our AMAZING team! It's fantastic to be able to assist multiple departments and collaborate with brilliant people, all working towards the same mission in some way. KHS is an inspiring place to work, and I am so glad to have found a spot within the team."

Her manager Lee Harper shared, "Courtney has been an incredible asset to KHS in the year she has worked here. She jumps in where needed and enjoys learning about a variety of areas around the shelter."
"Courtney supports our Customer Service team when they need it, walks dogs as needed, supports me in all sorts of projects, co-led our first ever staff appreciation week, supports the capital campaign and all things finance. I love walking in every day and seeing Courtney’s smiley face and warm greeting. Thanks for being a part of the KHS team Courtney!"

We couldn’t agree more, Courtney. Thank you for all you do!
