"I have found that the surest way of seeing the wondrous in something ordinary, something previously underappreciated, is coming to love someone who loves it. As we enter each other’s worlds in love — whatever its shape or species — we double our way of seeing, broaden our way of being, magnify our sense of wonder, and wonder is our best means of loving the world more deeply." Maria Popova
It’s been an intense year for me, and it’s been lovely to step away from the small world of my mind this week and find rest in the generosity and passions of others. One afternoon was a lecture on our endangered bighorn sheep from 2 privately funded organizations to preserve the species and their habitat. HOME | bighorninstitute. Home - Oswit Land Trust The next day was an introduction to Judy Francesconi and her art at the V-Lounge. Judy Francesconi is an American photographer concentrating on black-and-white fine art photography of lesbian women. Zenfolio | JUDY FRANCESCONI FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY | The Classics Collection. Judy has a remarkable story, a pioneer in photographing lesbians while most of us were still hidden deep in the closet.
On the hiking trails, others talk with happiness about their volunteer work with the L-fund, food banks, and theaters. They tell the stories of their lives; they talk about what they love, what draws them, what they have learned, and what they want to learn. They talk of travels done, and travels longed for, and my world broadens and deepens. One of my friends is a trail angel for PCT hikers, and I love to hear her talk about the hikers she hosts. Other friends organize lesbian meetups and outings. Some work hard to improve lesbian healthcare. Everyone and every passion has challenges, setbacks, and difficulties. Yet to be blessed with the love of something so strong that one carries on regardless is grace and wonder. Love of cooking, love of movies, love of history, whenever we embed ourselves in what draws us and challenges us, we strengthen ourselves and sometimes enrich those around us..For me, it was good to touch the edges of other people's lives and let their sense of wonder restore me this week.
Kim
Dorien and I have decided to downsize in Palm Springs, so we are selling the house and will buy a smaller condo here. Family and friends are drawing us north. The plan is to buy a small condo in Canada or the Pacific northwest to escape the hot summers down here for a few months. That means D and I are negotiating 90% of our possesions. Pack for Palm Springs, pack for the northwest, give to Revivals, put it on the sidewalk or find unlocked dumpsters and do some late night driving. It's going to take a minute.

Women’s History
Women, We Should Know
Ynes Mexía, who braved earthquakes, bogs, and poisonous berries to reach a remote volcano on the border of Colombia and Ecuador—all for the sake of botanical discoveries. “We started on the long journey back,” she wrote after collecting samples of the rare wax palm, “very tired, very hot, very dirty, but very happy.”
On this day in 1925, Mexía embarked on her first plant collection trip, travelling with a group from Stanford University to Sinaloa, Mexico in search of rare botanical species. The 55-year-old had joined the local Sierra Club just a few years earlier, enrolling in special classes at UC Berkeley soon after. Despite falling off a cliff and fracturing her hand and some ribs, Mexía brought home around 500 specimens—50 of them previously undiscovered.

This Week's Recommendation
Alex Edelman - Just for Us on HBO/MAX 2024 Emmy Winnter
The seeds of “Just For Us” were planted in 2017, when Edelman received “an avalanche of antisemitism” from online trolls. He stumbled on an invite for a get-together of white supremacists at an apartment in Queens, and feeling emboldened, decided to infiltrate the mixer. His mission was to uncover the root of their hatred and bigotry. But through comedy, Edelman uses the experience to spark bigger conversations about identity, whiteness and the limits of empathy.
