Hello! It's getting to be that time of the year again! Yes, it's the holiday season!

This year, as a small thank you to teachers and educators (because I know they've been through a lot!), I'm offering a free Q&A webinar for classes and homeschool groups right before December break! Please tell any teachers you know to sign up now!

And if you are looking for holiday gift ideas, I have you covered! You can get the teachers or the kid readers in your life personally autographed books (by yours truly) as well as the Where the Mountain Meets the Moon Trilogy Calendar from the Carle Museum! Or you can get personalized, autographed print from my etsy shop! Hope they make your holiday season just a bit happier!
Sign Up for My Free Q&A Webinar!
At an attempt at equity, I offer a free 20 min Q&A webinar three or four times a year. And, this is one of them! I hope this brings a little cheer to students and teachers right before the holiday break!

When: Dec 9, 2021 01:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Topic: Q&A with Grace Lin!

This free session is appropriate for book clubs, schools and classes who have read Grace’s books. Register in advance for this webinar: HERE!

Guidelines
  • All participating students must have read at least one of Grace’s books.
  • The questions should be prepared and sent ahead of time.
  • Please do not record Grace’s Zoom sessions.
  • This will be a Q&A session, we suggest that you share one of Grace's drawing or reading videos before or after the webinar to give the students a full experience.
  • For personally signed books, we suggest purchasing at Grace’s local bookstore High Five Books or the Carle Museum Bookstore and she can sign the books before they are shipped out.

Holiday Shopping!
It is a good idea to start shopping early if you can this year! You probably have heard all about the current supply chain issues going on! It is affecting everything, including books! So be an early bird this year! Here are some gift ideas for you:

Grace Happenings
Unfortunately, A Big Mooncake for Little Star was caught up in the book banning craze that seems to be spreading over the country. In this recent article with the School and Library Journal, I speak about the shock I felt when it happened and how, maybe, we can turn all these book bannings into an opportunity.
I was honored (among other authors) to participate in the “Tell Me Another Story: Diversity in Children's Literature" documentary made by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.

This 30 minute documentary celebrates the diversity movement in children’s books and highlights its importance to the health of our society. Please watch HERE!

Also with the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, I was featured in one of their shorts to bring attention to the bookmaking competition program they have in NYC!

As a child, it was winning 4th place in a bookmaking competition that made me decide to become an author (you can hear all about that in the video)! So, I hope this competition inspires some new authors as well!
More about Storytelling Math!

The story behind my Storytelling Math board books ("Circle, Sphere," "The Last Marshmallow," and "Up to My Knees," What Will Fit," was highlighted in a recent webinar with Becker's.

The replay of the webinar is now available for anyone to watch!
Learn how my thoughts about diversity perfectly meshed with the publisher's question, "Who gets to see themselves as a math thinker?" and see a sneak preview of the new Storytelling Math board books I am working on now! Watch HERE!
Also, read a recent blog post about one of my math storytelling books, The Last Marshmallow!
I Am an American Now Available!
I am excited to announce the book "I am An American: The Wong Kim Ark Story" written by Martha Brockenbrough (with consultation from yours truly) is NOW AVAILABLE! It is illustrated by Julia Kuo. We've been having some supply-chain issues but the book is worth the wait!

This is an important book that I worked on as a consultant and I’m so glad it will be out in the world. It’s an important story about a young man who challenged the Supreme Court for his right to be an American citizen, won and set the precedent for birth-right citizenship in the United States.
School Visits!

Look at this awesome Jade Dragon created by students of the school I was lucky to get to visit (virtually)! Thanks so much Hindley School!

I would be happy to schedule a virtual visit with your school as well! You can find all my information about scheduling a virtual visit HERE.

I am starting to schedule in-person visits for 2022, but in-person events will be limited so I can finish writing more books! ☺️

If your school does not have the budget to have me, please sign up for my free webinar above! And if that doesn't work out, there are always my videos...
Videos for Kids!
Did you know on my website and YouTube Channel, I have several videos where teach kids how to draw?
I always interweave bits of Chinese culture relevant to my books into the drawing lesson, so these are great supplements to my books.

Events
I'm proud to say that I am the honorary chair of this year's Family Trees at the Concord Museum!

Author and illustrators of featured books will be at the Museum for readings and signings. I plan to be there (my first in-person event since the pandemic) so I hope you come!

When: Sunday, Dec 5th
1-3pm
Where: The Concord Museum, Concord MA
The Family Trees exhibit consists of 32 trees & wreaths of all shapes & sizes ornamented with inspiration from children’s picture books.

The Family Trees exhibit is November 24, 2021 to January 2, 2022.

I'm proud to say that I will be speaking alongside Dr. Patrick Rice for the Mastering Kids Summit's Fireside Chat. Hope to see you there!

Mastering Kids Summit: Tuesday, December 2nd, 2021 4:00-7:00pm
for Composer Phyllis Chen
I have finished the art for the collaboration I am doing with composer Phyllis Chen! See a video of the entire image HERE!

I can’t wait to see how Phyllis uses it at her performance at Merkin Hall in April! Tickets are already on sale here for the concert!
I have a poem in this book: Things We Do!

Poems from A to Z, featuring action words and photos, will make kids eager to CLAP, DANCE, JUMP, LAUGH, WAVE, ZOOM, and more!

100% of the profits from this book will be donated to the IBBY Children in Crisis.

This past Thursday, I took over the Instagram stories of my alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design--giving viewers a peek at a day in my life! All of the day's stories should soon be available to view under "RISD Alumni Takeovers" at @RISD1877 .

In the World of Podcasts!
The Kids Ask Authors podcast recently celebrated its 100th episode! We turned the tables and instead of kids asking authors a question, six authors asked six real kids from our Kid Book Review Club a question! Listen to Shannon Hale, Mitali Perkins, Linda Sue Park, Jenni Holm, Kekla Magoon, and Linda Sue Park join in on the fun!

We are always collecting submissions from kids! If you know a kid that has something to share, please encourage them! We’d love to hear from them!
Submit a question HERE!
Submit a kid book review, poem, short story or joke HERE!

Beverly Cleary. Jerry Pinkney. Lois Ehlert. Tomie DePaola. Eric Carle. Patricia Reilly Giff. Floyd Cooper. Norton Juster. Gary Paulsen. And more. The children’s book world lost so many greats in 2021 and because of that the Book Friends are putting together a very special episode in tribute of them.

Please be a part of it! Record your memory of a beloved author that passed—it can be meeting them, a correspondence or just how their work touched you and we’ll play it on the Book Friends Forever podcast!

Thank you for supporting us and joining our Patreon page!
And speaking of podcasts...I have been a guest on a couple really fun ones! For kids, catch me on Withy-Windle: A Bookish Podcast for Kids!
For aspiring children's book authors, you can hear my interview with Theo Baker on the SCBWI Conversations podcast! Happy listening!
I went as a lobster for Halloween! My daughter (Katara from the Last Airbender) was only slightly embarassed to be seen with me!
And that's it!

Even though we are rushing towards the holidays, I hope you are able to enjoy it! Wishing you the best for this season!

See you at Lunar New Year with crafts and fun tidbits about the upcoming Year of the TIGER!

Best, Grace
