 A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Why is this Night going to be SOOOOOO different from all other Nights:

In this year of crisis, anxiety, and sacrifice, we need to be kind to ourselves.  The Passover preparation that we are used to needs to be relaxed.  The Seders that we were used to preparing for our children and grandchildren will be less than what we have grown used to.

The requirement to be separated from our loved ones and our friends makes this year hard. If this had happened 20 years ago, our enforced quarantine would mean that we would be completely out of touch.  However, as we have learned over the last few weeks, today's virtual technology allow us to be together even if we cannot be physically next to each other.   While it is not a substitute for physical proximity, the ability to see, hear, and interact with each other is a blessing.

It is with this as our background that we welcome you to the JCC's Virtual Seders

First, make your own Seder plates.  Have salt water, Matzah (at least 4 pieces).

The Seders will begin at 6:00 pm on both Wednesday and Thursday.  We will try to keep each night to around an hour, but they may be a bit longer.  We will run the Seder and any songs in that time, afterward we can eat our separate meals.  At points in the Seder we will place you in random breakout rooms to give you and others an opportunity to discuss a prompt that I will give you.

The first night we will be using the PJ Library Haggadah. Though I will be sharing it on the zoom call, you can download it here:  PJ LIBRARY HAGADDAH

The Second night we will be using the Noam Tzio Haggadah, called "A Different Night". You can download this Haggadah here: A DIFFERENT NIGHT

We recommend that you download the Haggadot beforehand just in case we lose our connection, or cannot get on to the link.  Then you will have the ability to use them for your own Seder.

In an attempt to avoid some of the Zoom bombing incidents that have been happening, when you join the meeting, you will be placed in a waiting room. I will come in to the virtual waiting room ask who you are, and then bring you into the main meeting.

In advance, we will ask you to have patience as we do this. There are a lot of moving parts, and it is not always easy to navigate.

We will also be having morning services on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. They will start at 10:00 am and last for about an hour and a half.  For these services, use this link:  SERVICES

Wishing everyone a Zissen Pesach.  Next year may we all be together.

Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Basic Charoset Recipe

Ingredients
3 apples, peeled and diced
1 cup walnuts, toasted and roughly chopped
1 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
1 teaspoon sugar, or brown sugar
1 tablespoon red wine, sweet like Manischewitz
1 tablespoon honey
Directions
Place all ingredients in a large bowl and toss to combine evenly.
If you want this to be more of a spread, combine all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until just forming a paste.

From foodrepublic.com

Sephardic -style

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups red wine (recommended: cabernet sauvignon or Manischewitz)
1 pound (2 1/2 cups) red raisins
8 ounces (1 1/2 cups) dried dates, chopped fine
4 ounces (3/4 cup) dried apricots, chopped fine
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste
8 ounces (1 1/2 cups) roasted almonds
1 teaspoon orange blossom water (optional)

Directions
1. Bring wine to a light simmer on medium heat, then stir in fruit and spices. Cook uncovered until fruit is well hydrated and wine has reduced to a thick syrup, about 15 minutes. Add salt to taste and set aside.
2.  In a food processor, roughly chop almonds in short pulses. There should be no whole almonds remaining; a mix of large chunks and small crumbs is preferable. Remove almonds from food processor and transfer to a large mixing bowl.
3.  Add fruit mixture to food processor and pulse until fruit just begins to come together into a paste, 2 to 3 one-second pulses. Do not overprocess-large chunks of fruit should be intact.
4.  Transfer fruit to mixing bowl and combine well with almonds. Stir in orange blossom water and additional salt if needed. Flavor of haroset will improve over time. Serve warm or at room temperature.

SALE OF HAMETZ

As you know, we are required to empty our houses of hametz prior to the beginning of Passover. Please know that this year, because of food supply issues, you should not throw anything out unless it is 100% necessary. It is customary to sell the hametz remaining in our houses to a non-Jew for the duration of the holiday. By filling out this form (SALE OF HAMETZ FORM), I will sell your hametz for you. If you can make a pdf of the signed form, please do so and send it to me. If you cannot, please let me know via email ([email protected]) that you have completed the form. It is traditional to make a donation to the Rabbi's discretionary fund. Inasmuch as there are many people placed in need as a result of the coronavirus, this year is a particularly good time to consider selling your hametz and making a donation.
