Here at Ol Lentille, we have just come out of a fascinating period. For three months, the Laikipiak Maasai warriors set up a huge manyatta of 39 houses (called an "emanyatta"), each tended to by a representative of a different extended family. Over that period, thousands of Maasai warriors came through the "emanyatta" to undergo a series of initiations and trainings in order to graduate to the status of "junior elders". Bulls were slaughtered for bonding rituals, secret oaths taken and a leader elected, who will take responsibility for his age set until the day he dies.

These powerful and seldom seen rituals are not typically open to tourists, anywhere in East Africa. Through Ol Lentille's unique relationship with the local Maasai community (which owns the safari lodge and part of the conservancy), our guests were given access to the events taking place in the "emanyatta". Laura and I were fortunate enough to attend several of those rituals, and the emotion and awe which we felt have remained forever etched on our minds. Guests have described the experience as profound, moving and life changing.

In December, additional ceremonies will take place, to anoint the new leader of the rising warrior age set, elected for life. Many teenagers will also go through circumcision rituals, joining a new warrior age set.
