Sunday on Cultural Connection on the Air - Oscar Sales and Adam Schnell talk about collaboration and the season.

This is a month for thinking and shopping small and local, but this is a week for giving thanks. Before you see the next Arts Blast, turkey leftovers will be filling refrigerators and bellies and holiday shopping will be in full swing.

What am I thankful for in this extraordinarily unkind year? Let me count the ways.
I'm thankful for:

Continuing good health for myself, my family, and most of my friends.

The incredible perseverance and ingenuity of arts organizations and individuals everywhere.

The random kindness of neighbors and strangers.

And, of course, Arts Blast readers, whose numbers continue to grow despite the uncertainty.

😍

I didn't think this would be a year when I had to warn people not to wait to buy tickets but it seems I was wrong. Before writing a story about a Zoom demonstration of Key West Pottery making online from the Boca Museum of Art, I went to the website for a link. And there it was, SOLD OUT. So, yes, you will get reminders again not to dillydally if there's something you want to see or somewhere you want to go, Coronavirus or not.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! (Don't tell anybody, but I asked Alexa to play some soft Christmas music yesterday.)

Atlantic Classical Orchestra's David Amado Explains
I knew the Atlantic Classical Orchestra’s music director, David Amado, also has been with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra for close to twenty years, so when Facebook suggest I might be interested in the DSO, I clicked. There were photos of the musicians setting up for a concert, masked, distanced, and with some Plexiglas panels, so I asked the maestro how it was working.
“So far we’ve had two chamber concerts. The first, last month, was a woodwind quintet. Because of the nature of their music-making, they were in enclosed plexiglass boxes. In spite of that acoustic isolation, it worked out very well. I think it was disorienting at first for our players to be so far from one another, and acoustically separated, but they did beautifully accommodating to the new circumstance. This past week, we had a concert featuring our percussionist. Because of the nature of their music-making, we did not need quite the same sort of acoustic isolation. However, they played the entire concert masked, and distanced. It was absolutely wonderful—-they brought SO many instruments and played a HUGE variety of repertoire. It is wonderful to bring a section too often relegated to moments in a symphonic context to the fore to celebrate them for a whole evening!”
The Delaware Symphony’s panels were constructed by the DSO stage manager, Steve Manocchio, following guidelines used by the US Army Band. “Much of it has been a marriage of intuition and practicality together with known guidelines about distancing. The resulting boxes present some issues in terms of sound transmission—both to the players themselves and to the audience. However we feel the sacrifice is worth the safety of all involved, and everyone seems very happy about the ability to play/hear live music!”
Amado listed all the general safety measures they’ve put in place:
•Temperature of all audience members, staff, and musicians taken as they enter the venue.
•Everyone is masked at all times except for wind players (for obvious reasons)
•Musicians are separated from one another by at least six feet
•Musicians are isolated from one another and audience members by plexiglass shields
•Audience members are seated at least six feet from one another unless from the same household
•Hand sanitizer stations are placed at the entrance/exit of the venue
•Concerts have no intermission.
The ACO’s Chamber Series is scheduled to begin in January at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. All ticket sales will be done through the museum, as seating is limited. The Chamber Series at the Blake Library is currently on hold until further notice. All sales for the Chamber Series are final. Space is limited; pre-registration is required

Game of Pairs Sunday
Sunday, January 17, 2021 | 3pm
Kodály Duo for violin and cello
Ravel Sontata for violin and cello
Handel – Halvorsen Passacaglia for Violin and Viola

A decision about the season’s Masterworks Series will be made sometime this month.
In case you’ve been wondering about those panels shielding us in places like supermarkets, here you go, from the Internet:
There is no difference between acrylic and plexiglass. Acrylic is the usual abbreviation for polymethyl methacrylate, and Plexiglas® is one of the many brand names of this plastic. Over time this brand name has become generic as ‘plexiglass'.

A Holiday Update from Riverside Theatre
With the cancellation of this year's Festival of Trees, the Vero Beach Art Club will have a Holiday Showcase with their members' artwork and four fully decorated trees by Festival of Trees designers. The trees will be auctioned off to benefit the Theatre. The Holiday Showcase starts December 4 at the VBAC's new Annex location, the former Tiger Lily Gallery site on 14th Avenue, Vero Beach.

The Oceanside Business Association is working on a Festival of Wreaths with FOT designers. Stores on Ocean Drive will showcase the wreaths for sale with proceeds benefiting the Theatre. Wreaths will start decorating the storefronts December 4.
The Vero Beach Outlets have given Riverside Theatre several windows to showcase some holiday cheer. Windows went on display November 14.

Riverside's marketing director, Oscar Sales, said, "While there will be nothing on the Riverside Theatre campus for Festival of Trees, it will be nice to have touches of the Theatre throughout the community."

Comedy Zone and Live in the Loop continue weekends with 50 percent seating, advance ticketing, and safety guidelines in place.
First Pres Says Thank You with an Outdoor Concert
From Pastor Tim Womack at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach:

"This Sunday, Nov. 22, at 5 p.m., you are invited to a "Concert in the Park(...ing lot)." The concert is the church's way of saying thank you to the community for its support through this past year. "The concert is offered outside, a setting where more people can feel safe attending," Womack said.

Jacob Craig, who heads the Music and Arts Department at First Pres, "has organized a tremendous slate of musicians from the community, the church, and from the FPC Youth Orchestra" for this one hour-no intermission performance.

The concert will be held in front of the Center for Christian Life. Seating will be throughout the parking area. We will have areas designated for family or limited groups up to six. All seating areas will be socially distanced. Please bring your own chairs, snacks and beverages.

Masks and social distancing will be required and your best judgement, while eating and in your own family or group seating area, is requested. There will be a mask contest with several "Mask" categories and awards.

A free will offering will be accepted to alleviate the cost associated with this event

Jon Kral's Work Opens at Backus Museum
November 20, 2020 – January 3, 2021
Insight: Photography of Jon Kral
During his 18 years with the Miami Herald, Jon Kral earned a reputation as an outstanding photojournalist covering decades of unprecedented growth, social and political upheaval, and natural disasters both home and abroad – it was the best street education a photographer could receive. Whether on assignment or following his muse, Kral has always focused on his documentary interests, with a special affinity for people, places, and capturing the right moment.

Kral spent his youth in Fort Pierce "back when it was a scruffy town on the edge of Florida’s cowboy country," said J. Marshall Adams, Backus Museum's Executive Director. "The show will include of more than thirty black and white photographs, with many Florida cowhunting images evoking the ranch life and living; a collection of diverse scenes showcasing the artist’s affinity for people, animals, and the land; and some old time Fort Pierce places and familiar individuals, including Bud Adams, “Uncle Bill” Summerlin, Harold Williams, Art “Potty” Pottorff, and A.E. "Bean" Backus. The photographs span the years from the early 1970s through to the 2000s. Many have never been on display or published before."

Good Eats At the Elliott
If you're a reader from the Philadelphia area, you almost certainly have a firm opinion of what goes into a steak sandwich or a sub. Personally, if you hand me a cheesesteak with marinara sauce and Cheese Whiz, you'll be wearing it. Load mine up with plenty of sauteed onions and green peppers, American cheese, tomatoes, and catsup. Yes, catsup. No matter how you like the innards, though, if the roll isn't from the Amoroso bakery, it isn't perfect.
A familiar sight at festivals and food truck events on the Treasure Coast, Philly Down South Café will be opening on the second floor of the Elliott Museum Dec. 1. According to its website, Philly Down South serves its sandwiches on Amoroso rolls!

From the Elliott: Philly Down South Café is excited to call Hutchinson Island its home and the Historical Society of Martin County is happy that home is now on the second floor of the Elliott Museum! Opening on Tuesday, Dec. 1, lunch will be served daily and happy hour will happen every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 5-7 p.m. For pickup, reservations, or private events, call 772-225-1961, or visit the website, www.phillydownsouth.net.
The Morikami Takes Stock
The Covid restrictions that kept so many arts organizations and businesses on idle month after month this year gave some a rest but for others it was a chance to do things there had never been time for.

At the Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, they took advantage of the opportunity to sort through every nook and cranny and count their blessings, literally. A museum spokesman said, "our curatorial staff conducted a detailed inventory of our collection—thousands of objects acquired over the past four decades—all relating to Japanese history and culture."

The inventory did more than update Morikami's records. "This project allowed us to make significant advances in scholarly research and digital documentation of our amazing collection of visual art, historic objects, and archival documents relating to the Yamato Colony."
The current exhibition, Collecting Stories, highlights more than 100 works from the Morikami’s Permanent Collection and featured in five vignettes, or mini-exhibitions:
See early 20th century kimono in Dressing the Modern Girl.
Explore the many different varieties of utensils used for making and serving sake in Celebrating Sake.
Learn about the vast array of face masks used in Japan, from medieval samurai armor to sci-fi anime characters, in Masquerade.
Observe the profound emotions associated with the moon while gazing at A View of the Moon featuring both traditional woodblock prints and contemporary artworks.
Consider the culturally intertwined beliefs of Shintō shrines and Buddhist altars in Sacred Spaces.

From Coast to Coast, US Museums Are Closing Again as COVID’s Second Wave Takes Hold
Institutions in Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, and Washington, DC, are among those shutting down.
From Art & Object:

Hunting for treasure in all its various forms is something humankind has pursued for centuries, from diamonds and gold to a good deal found in the bargain bin. Finding value in something others have overlooked is a unique thrill, and for some art lovers, the hunt has paid off in a big way. Here are eight paintings found in unusual places that turned out to be worth more than anticipated.
From the Royal Albert Hall:

Katherine Jenkins: Christmas Spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall will be in cinemas and on DVD.
From AllArts.org:

A fire destroyed the Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’s Pillow Tuesday morning, issuing a blow to a dance community already rattled by the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.
No injuries were reported, and the flames did not spread to any of the other buildings on the organization’s historic 220-acre campus, located in Becket, Mass. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
Event schedules can change, often at almost the last minute. Verify, double check, and then do it again before you head out the door. And when you do go out, take a mask. Without one, you risk being turned away.
