January is

Train Your Dog

Month!

Redfern Canines has scheduled several special events during January to celebrate!

First of all, we are excited to announce that we have added a new class to our curriculum--Puppy Travels! The class will be perfect those looking for a way to move their dogs from Puppy or Beginners if our Advanced Manners Class is just not right yet. Take a look at the description in this newsletter and on the website!

Secondly, the American Kennel Club (AKC) implemented video Rally testing during Covid. The program was so successful that it has been made a permanent option to earn any Rally title. We have scheduled 2 Sundays (Jan 8 and Feb 12) to offer video taping opportunities!

And finally, keep an eye on your in-box! Each Friday in January, we will send a mini Redfern Ramblings with a training tidbit for you!

Redfern Offers an Easier Way to Work on Rally Title!

In 2023, Redfern Canines will be offering 2 videotaping sessions of rally competition which can be submitted to the AKC toward title work.

Our two local dates are January 8, 2023, and February 12, 2023. If you would like to participate, and start your title work closer to home, email betsy@redferncanines.com

Your Invitation to "Be Nosy"

Our drop-in nose work classes are the perfect way to get nosy without committing to class.

Classes will continue to be offered the 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings of every month for sniffers looking to practice for competition. Drop in classes are $15 each, payable at each class. (Or you can purchase a 6 class punch card for $75.) Please note: participation in drop-in classes requires the dogs to have completed a beginning nose work class or have competition experience.

Ho, ho, ho...

We know it's difficult to think about January, and winter, in the midst of the holiday season, but now is the perfect time to sign up for a January class to beat the winter doldrums.

Classes are filling as quickly as they are posted. Head on over to the website now and schedule some fun for you and Fido. You'll be glad you did!

New Class: Puppy Travels

So, you've finished your first puppy class, but aren't quite ready for Advanced Manners? Then Puppy Travels may be just the thing you need. Designed to build self-confidence and reinforce all the behaviors you learned in puppy class, Puppy Travels starts with your first class at the training center, and subsequent classes are out and about in the community. It's the perfect time to practice skills in the real world, with the benefit of a dog trainer by your side.

Our first session begins on January 4th, and a second session begins on January 26th. For more information, and to register, visit our website.

Please note: dogs must be UNDER 9 months of age at the start of the class.

Staff Spotlight

Victoria & Lily

Victoria Lichtenwalner has been training dogs since the age of 4 when she worked with her black Lab Corie. Victoria has worked with Redfern’s Kidz ‘n K-9’s Day Camp for the past 8 years as an assistant trainer. These days, she has worked with a local veterinary practice and is preparing to become a licensed veterinary assistant. A member of the Harrisburg Kennel Club, Victoria currently teaches Puppy classes and Intro to Nosework.

Robin Brightbill began her relationship at Redfern Canines by taking every class we offered!

Since then, she has become an experienced trainer locally in her own right, and we are thrilled that she has joined the Redfern team, along with her sweet girl, Chloe.

Robin teaches a wide variety of classes here at Redfern, including Beginners, Advanced Manners, Tricks and Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog Preparation.

Portia's Piece:

Hi there everyone!

I am really getting excited about the holidays and all the new friends that will visit here. But at the same time, I am a little worried about having too many people at once! And I would bet that there are lots of others out there just like me!

So, I have made a list of things to remind my ‘mom’ to take care of!

1. Remember that visitors are a change in my routine—and change is stressful. So, please try to keep life as normal and comfortable as possible.

2. Greeting people at the door can be very exciting AND intense. So, it might be a good idea for me to rest in my crate/safe place until all the visitors have gotten into the house. A bonus—I won’t be able to sneak out the door when people come in.

3. Remember, I LOVE cookies. So have new people introduce themselves to me by offering me one of my favorite treats.

4. And lastly, when you are working so hard to get ready for all the visitors, take time to play and walk with me!

I hope everyone and everypup has a wonderful, wonderful holiday and that 2023 brings all of us lots of good times and fun!
