Dealing with DANGEROUS GAME
Just got back from another TRIP to MONTANA. Getting to know the road so I can drive it in my sleep.
|
|
Rim-fire targets are done and ready for the competitions I plan on holding there. The course of fire will be 70 targets over a 3/4 mile walking course. That's a lot of prairie dogs to eradicate.
|
|
LASER FREE ZONES have been established on portions of the course. Use your reticle to determine range and make the shot. ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN WHEN THINGS GO WRONG.

One of several bucks residing in the Coulee. I'd guestimate he is a 3-4-year old deer that shows great potential.

Head WEST from Indian Point and you'll find the BOZEMAN TRAIL DETOUR.

CLEANING KITS FOR YOUR RIFLE!
The response to the article on rifle cleaning was terrific. Thanks for the feedback. In regards to that, it was suggested that we offer a COMPLETE cleaning kit for serious shooters who have neglected purchasing the proper equipment to clean and maintain their rifles.
The KIT will contain the following items:
1) 2- BORETECH CLEANING RODS; (ONE FOR BRUSHING ONE FOR PATCHING)
2) PROPER BORE GUIDE FOR THE CALIBER/CHAMBER;
3) PATCH JAG FOR THE APPROPRIATE CALIBER;
4) LUG AND CAM COMPOUND WITH SYRINGES;
5) CHAMBER AND LUG RACEWAY TOOLS;
6) PATCHES 500 COUNT;
7) 12 Cleaning Brushes;
8) SOLVENTS AND BORE LUBE;
9) DETAILED CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS.
You've spent thousands of dollars on your custom rifle, best to take care of the investment with proper cleaning gear to do the JOB RIGHT. Over the years I've seen a lot of damage to barrels from improper cleaning methods, such as multi-piece rods, failing to use a bore guide, stainless steel brushes (OUCH!) and just plain neglect. (rust, fouling, etc) Purchasing the RIGHT GEAR will keep you in the X-Ring and keep the freezer full.

HUNTING SEASON IS ALMOST HERE!
|
|
Montana is shaping up quite well. I just returned from 10 days of working on the property with heavy equipment. We now have a GREAT road with culverts installed on the main entry. There is access to the far side of the Coulee and the road can be used with either a pickup truck, UTV, or better yet, my UBCO bike. I was amazed at how quickly you can move dirt with the right equipment. Large excavators, graders, skid steers, belly dumps, and side dumps were employed to move thousands of yards of dirt. The next trip we will be taking building supplies, a Quonset hut, targets, benches, and supplies to prep for possibly holding classes in mid-late September if all goes well. Photo shows fresh rock being spread on the fixed-range sites. Cement slabs that are 10'x40' will be set to the left and will be covered with an awning.

Darrell’s Training Tips Worth Adopting!

DEALING WITH DANGEROUS GAME!
It is easy to become lax after years of hunting and taking hundreds of animals without incident. Deer, elk, antelope, caribou, and coyotes can impart serious wounds and often death if we fail to make sure of their demise. Seldom does this occur in North America, provided the hunter does his/her job in approaching the animal from the rear and taking the necessary precautions (touching the animal with the muzzle or stick/rock) to make sure it is dead. Rubbing doe-in-heat scent on your clothing and chasing whitetail bucks can be another issue.
The big problem we face is when we hunt DANGEROUS GAME ANIMALS (animals with a bad attitude, or those who see us as a protein source). This will include but is not limited to: bears, big cats, cape buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, wild boars, etc.
These four-legged critters will/can send you to the PEARLY GATES IN A HEARTBEAT if you fail to exercise proper caution in dealing with them. When wounded, or finding you between them and offspring, or an escape route, a mauling can be in your future.
Every year there are deaths or serious injuries in Africa when the hunter fails to do his/her part in ensuring the animal is down. Most PHs are very cautious when dealing with dangerous game, and adhere to the proper protocol to keep a client safe. Normally, it's the client that freezes, short cycles the rifle, panics, runs, or a hundred other combinations that result in death or injury.
Bad habits like failing to cycle the bolt after every shot, are commonplace, and fending off a bear, hippo, or cape buffalo with your buttstock seldom works. When training hunters for dangerous game, I try to induce stress, demand rapid bolt cycling drills, as well as implementing moving and shooting scenarios. If we do not train under stressful situations, we are apt to fail under dangerous situations.
Shooting school student Louis Baum has just returned from another successful African hunt for crocodile and hippo. Louis is a dedicated hunter who takes the craft seriously when he's in the field.
Hippos kill a large number of natives a year in Africa and can be a real menace if you are between them and the river. Those huge tusks can put 2-inch diameter holes in you with a single bite, much like a paper punch. Bears and cape buffalo often charge if the hunter is in sight when shot. Thick brush, willows and tangle can often deflect your follow-up shots, increasing the adreneline rush you get from a charging animal. Now the storyline becomes YOU or HIM.
So what's the best method to prevent such injury or loss of life? There are several things in my opinion: understanding dangerous game anatomy and incorporating multiple shots once the animal is down. Breaking down the running gear is a wise consideration; shoulder shots that also penetrate the heart/lung cavity also work well. Brain shots, only when the shooter is capable and the distance is short, preferably 100 yards or less.
We all like to brag on single-shot kills. However, when dangerous game is sought, I feel it is imperative to put additional shots into them, ensuring they will not resurrect as you walk toward them with an empty chamber.
Louis performed this technique on the hippo he shot; he made a perfect brain shot (the hippo was DRT after his first shot) but he followed up with 3 additional neck-shoulder shots, ensuring the animal never made it to the water or him.
Ammunition is cheap compared to EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS and/or a burial site in a foreign land.

NEW COULEE TARGETS FOR THE 22 RIM-FIRE COURSE.
I've cut and welded over 75 of these targets from .250 inch AR-400 steel. These targets will be placed from 25-300 yards along the 3/4 mile COULEE WALKING COURSE. Shooters will engage targets across the coulee; there are steep angled shots and plenty of wind to deal with. Shooters will engage targets from the sitting, kneeling, standing, and prone positions.
Bring your favorite 22, your son/daughter or your hunting partner, and sign up for the "PAINT THE TOWN RED" prairie dog shoot.
At the end of the day, we'll make a fire and roast them to perfection over a bed of hot coals. Survivors will be left to propagate so we can offer this shoot on an annual basis. Bring your own beverages.
With over 200 knock-over prairie dog targets, a day at the range will create memories to last a lifetime. Watch for shoot dates in the NEWSLETTER and make your reservation. I'll limit the course initially to just 30 TEAMS. If we can handle that many competitors we can expand that number on the NEXT SHOOT!

Staying health conscious is more important than ever, and one's diet plays a big role in how we feel and how long we may live. Most newsletter subscribers are healthy and have a tendency to eat the right foods. Red protein being high on the list for those who hunt and fish in the great outdoors.
A problem can arise if we fail to draw a tag for our annual hunt for deer, elk, or antelope in our given area. An empty freezer can create a bit of disharmony in the family unit if not corrected.
Well, worry no more!
Enter TANTRUM FARMS, A FAMILY OPERATION THAT PRODUCES SOME OF THE BEST RED PROTEIN ON THE PLANET.
Say good-bye to supermarket-quality meat laden with red dyes, artificial hormones and a diet of "who knows what" that is prepared on a large scale to feed the masses. TANTRUM FARMS and the Hammond family take great pride in the production of grass-fed, hormone-free black Angus beef. On a good year, they run roughly 650 cows on the ranch; carefully selected 2-year- old cows are set aside for butchering.
All meat is processed at the family-owned USDA-approved facility and is dry-aged to perfection. The Hammond's take great pride in their efforts to supply your family with the best table fare you can buy, and at a reasonable price. You can choose specific cuts of meat, dine on your favorite rib-eyes, sirloins, filets and know you are feeding you and your family quality grass-fed MONTANA BEEF.
With winter just around the corner and the holidays fast approaching, take a minute to look over their website and place your order.

When ordering, if you talk with Corrine, have her share her story as to the naming of the business. I found it quite amusing.
Tell her you found out about them in the NEWSLETTER, and with a little arm-twisting, she might throw in a surprise.

Friend Ron Spomer and I are planning to hold a hunting course on the MONTANA property in late September if all goes well with range construction and facilities. Ron is an excellent hunter and noted author in the outdoor world. Between the two of us, we bring almost 100 years of hunting experience for students to absorb. If you are interested in this course, please contact the shop and be put on a LIST: first/come first serve for 10 students. As things develop and a firm date can be set, Rosita or I will contact you.
This is a 4-day intensive hunting course along the Big Coulee: real-world hunting situations, off-hand, sitting, kneeling, prone, off sticks, stalking skills, and field-expedient shooting positions.
Only $2095.00 per student.
Miss this course and continue missing in the field!

Louis Baum with a 14-foot crocodile taken in Africa. Another perfect brain shot put an end to this potential man-eater along the river. I may have to start a crocodile fund for the future; a full-body mount next to the hot tub may be in order. Most recently Louis has added to his collection of fine rifles: a Holland 6.5 Creedmoor and a 6mm XC. He is an avid handloader, as well, so hours can be spent at the loading bench developing loads during the winter months. When he's not working, you'll find him at the range burning powder while increasing his carbon footprint!

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
Anytime we leave the security of our house or vehicle, it's not a bad idea to think about our level of preparedness. Gun, knife, phone, food, water, first aid supplies, coat, hat, cash, etc. Make sure your vehicle has some survival gear in the trunk or backseat. You never know when you may be stranded beside the road in a storm, a vehicular accident, or some other calamity. Thinking ahead can keep your DNA in the gene pool.

NEW ZEALAND
With COVID issues subsiding it may be a good time to enjoy some KIWI hospitality and venture to the SOUTH ISLAND and vacation with Richard and Sarah Burdon at Glen Dene. Great fishing and hunting opportunities abound: red stags, tahr, chamois and feral hogs await the eager sportsman. The scenery is off-the-charts and a memorable vacation is just a phone call away. Richard and Sarah will make you feel like long-lost relatives returning to the fold.

Louis Baum with a large male hippo killed with a surgical brain shot and additional follow-ups, ensuring a DRT memory with no potential for a trip to the ER. On any DANGEROUS GAME animals I reccommend one or two follow-up shots to prevent resurrection. Why run the RISK of ending a beautiful hunt with a foolish mistake; ammo is cheap when compared to a foreign burial plot.

MONTANA
One of several shooting sites being bladed off for the shooting school. These overlook the BIG COULEE, allowing shooters to "FIND" targets and engage them.
Currently under construction is the EAGLES NEST. This 10-foot tower overlooks the property and offers targets to ROUGHLY 800 yards.
Better bring your "A" game; the wind and difficulty in finding targets can be a challenge!

A friend and noted author GARY LEWIS has a new book out on the NOSLER CLAN. Gary shares some great history of the Nosler family (as told by Bob Nosler) from the early days of Partition bullets to high-tech Accu-bond designs. The book contains an amazing collection of family hunting pictures and stories to match. I always find it interesting to know the history behind successful companies and their founders. Seldom is it a 'rags to riches" fairy tale; usually it's lots of hard work, barrels of midnight oil, a bit of luck and timing. Take a break from the evening NEWS and read this book. It will lower your stress levels and take you back to the days of yore.
This book is sure to please!

HUNTING WITH A GUIDE THIS YEAR?
Make sure he or she has a copy of your DATA CARD in the event you need a back-up. Every shooter should use our scope cap (objective bell) decal and memorize your W/E numbers to 500 yards as well as your WIND CONSTANT. These are important skills you need to brush up on prior to hunting season.
|
|
TECH TIP #337
Take a few minutes to create a LIST of items you need this hunting season and keep track of items you use or not. After a while, you will have distilled down a list that covers all your needs. Nothing is worse than forgetting something, or having too much gear in the truck that you don't need!
Wise hunters create lists and keep good notes!

RIMX 22 Trainers.
I just finished two sample rifles for the shooting school. They will be used this year with students who are flinching behind the rifle, allowing them to get back in the game. I cannot overemphasize the importance of having a good 22 LR to practice and train with. Ammo cost is affordable, recoil is mild, and one can practice ALL the necessary techniques (rapid target acquisition, bolt cycling, trigger compressions) to stay sharp come hunting season. There are a lot of PRS rim-fire shoots as well and competition will enhance your skillset as you've never imagined.
Too many shooters think they need to practice at 1000 yards to maintain an edge. This is such nonsense! It's body position, target acquisition, focus, breathing, trigger compression, and follow-thru that keep you sharp. Besides, where are you going to find a 1000-yard range that you can practice on?
Winchester 52s, Remington 37s, Anschutz 1710s are also good choices for this type of practice. Keep an eye open for them at gun shows and local PAWN SHOPS. Expect to pay $900-1500 for examples in excellent condition.
