How a clinical trial gave a patient access to a new treatment years before common usage

Tim Buikema didn't care what the prognosis was – he wasn't going to have surgery on his face. The potentially disfiguring surgery to remove a large melanoma just wasn't worth it to him.

But an immunotherapy trial underway at Hollings offered another way.

Sara Couch was a new mother juggling sleepless nights and a demanding law career. She figured her cramps and low back pain just came with the territory.

When a routine doctor's visit revealed a diagnosis of cervical cancer, Sara wondered whether she would live to see her daughter's first birthday.

A year after that shocking diagnosis, Sara shared her emotional story at the Hollings Cancer Center Linda Floyd Forum on Women's Cancers.
