Our 20th anniversary! It was an especially busy and challenging year. Before we begin again, we'd like to share some of the ways our team responded to the needs of the dogs and families of our community in 2019.

Camp Fire disaster response work ruled our activities in 2019. We worked steadily to support 60+ families so they could keep their dogs after the fires. The biggest need obviously being safe shelter during this crushing housing shortage. We're indebted to all the survivors who entrusted us with their raw, painful stories and their friendship during this difficult time.

Bus Homes . Six donated transit buses were converted into emergency housing for displaced dog owners in 2019. Four families are now utilizing them as 'homes' with their multi-pets. A fifth recipient has since transitioned to a dog friendly rental (yes!) and another to a larger RV, leaving us with two Buses, both now converted, parked and ready to respond quickly to future emergencies.

Vick Dog News And Transitions

We said good-bye to Vick dog Ernie, leaving just Uba, Zippy, Frodo and Jonny Justice to represent in our corners.

Left: Ginger was still with us when this photo was taken this summer but sadly, she passed away just weeks later. She is very missed.

This was GREAT. The AKC Family Dog Magazine highlighted the most impressive accomplishments of the Vick dogs who made CA their home in this uplifting article. It was just what the doctor ordered. Enjoy. LINK

2019 - The Year of the Accidental Puppy

It was a big year for working with overwhelmed homes who wanted to stop their dogs from breeding, which meant a larger number of puppies at the Rescue Barn (eek!) and spay/neuter surgeries for all. Lots of puppy poop this year, but three cheers for progress! Meet one of the homes who jumped on our offer of help.

Medical Needs

At the Rescue Barn, we smoothed Casey through a broken leg and Kimmy through skin issues, infections and a mouth tumor. Tito the puppy required blood transfusions, received from two of our Pit Bulls! We battled mange in several puppies and Parvo virus in two. Keep'Em Home clients who received donated help included dogs with tumors, mobility problems, cryptorchidism and trickier spays including dogs with pyometra. Our amazing veterinarians helped us to drastically trim costs in every situation..

What's Next? In 2020, more reach to improve our stewardship.

Powered by the Sun. We believe that animal shelters should be as humane for the environment as they are for the animals. So this February, the Rescue Barn and Guest Cabin will be totally off grid - juiced by a well muscled solar power system built onto the Barn's roof. Even more, the vet care equipment of our new and improved mobile surgery unit (our new Nut Truck!) will be energized by the sun, too. Our new van will allow us to extend our services to areas we couldn't reach before, in part because we've always been dependent on finding locations that offered 'shore power,' ie, electric plugins. We look forward to adventures ahead..

Pit Ed Seminar. We're planning a special how-to workshop for motivated dog handlers who want to learn how to incorporate the lessons of Tai Chi Chaun into their dog handling work. Stay tuned. We're really excited about this one!
