Holy Faith Weekly Update 10/1/2024

Help People Affected by Hurricane Helene

In late September, Hurricane Helene hit the coast of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, dropping heavy rains on the southeastern United States and leaving millions of people without power. As the storm has moved inland, it has caused dangerous flooding and landslides, as well as downed trees and power lines. How you can help:

Still In This Together - No One Need Deal with Dementia Alone

Alzheimer’s and other dementias touch many families, and the numbers are increasing. We invite you to come to the “In This Together” dementia awareness and education lecture series every Tuesday evening in October at 7PM, presented by Jim Mangi and his colleagues at Dementia Friendly Saline.

The talks will be updated versions from the similar series Jim presented in 2019, but this time, they will also be zoomed to increase their accessibility. Also, each talk will include snack-mediated time for discussion, along with (upon advance request), supervised care for loved ones living with dementia.

For more information, for the zoom link, or to reserve a respite spot for a loved one, contact Dementia Friendly Saline at dfsaline.org. or contact Jim directly at jim.dfsaline@gmail.com.

Plan this Year’s Crèche Exhibit

If you would like to help plan this year’s Crèche Exhibit (which includes overseeing the setting up of creches and coordinating docents during the event), please let Pastor Andrea know: andrea@holy-faith-church.org

The exhibit is traditionally displayed the first weekend of December. Molly Hilton, who started the creche exhibit, has stepped down as coordinator after 7 faithful years. Molly has made it easy for you (or two, or a group of people) by making extensive notes about what needs to be done.

The Exhibit has been growing in attendance each year and people outside the church have been purposely looking for it to mark on their calendars. Let's keep offering this wonderful community outreach program that celebrates the birth of Christ.

Here's a link to an article on the Exhibit when it was started in 2018.

Holy Faith’s Annual Pledge Campaign Kicks Off Next Week

Next week, Holy Faith’s annual pledge campaign kicks off. We will intentionally share stories of how we Walk in Love with each other in our congregation. It takes something as radical as God’s Love to inspire us to share our time, talent, and treasure. Please be thinking about how your life has been positively impacted by God’s Love, present in this congregation.

Also, members will soon receive an invitation to make a financial pledge for 2025, so that Holy Faith may continue sharing God’s Love. Please prayerfully consider your commitment. It is not the size of the gift that matters, but the intention. The more of us who participate, the bigger the impact; this is a journey we make together.

JOURNEY OF FAITH

Adult Education Class

Our adult education class meets Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Social Hall. Instead of one subject, this year we are going to study a variety of different topics. The list isn't finalized yet, but topics will probably include looking at the Dead Sea Scrolls (review and updates!); Walking Along with Jesus (DVD); So You Think You Know The Bible (arcane and little known facts); and reviewing how the Bible was created and books that didn't make it. In December we will take our usual break and this year we will look at Italian Christmas and other TBA topics.

 The Chosen Watch Parties

At last … the summer break from our The Chosen watch party has come to an end! (see the attached updated schedule here).

If you have heard about this wonderful series and/or our lively discussions and would like to be a part of it, our next class is on Thursday, October 3rd.

Refreshments will be provided, or bring your own dinner to eat during the watch party. Doors open ~6:00-6:15 pm for food, etc. We’ll begin the episode ~6:30 pm

If you would like more information or have any questions, please contact Lori Venable (ltvenable@att.net) or Chris Martin (cmartin127@gmail.com).

Sunday Forum Focusing on the Sacred Ground Curriculum Continues on Sunday, October 6th

Sister Veronica Dunbar (Sister Vee - click here for bio) from the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan has offered to come to Holy Faith to conduct a series of Sunday forums that will focus on the Sacred Ground curriculum.

This faith-based dialogue about race is rooted in scripture and the baptismal covenant, and we will be learning more about the ongoing impact of slavery and Jim Crow laws.

Though the series is usually 11 weeks long, Sister Vee will create a mini version, tailored for us, which she will present on four Sundays.

Holy Faith will look at the Lectionary Gospel readings through the lens of what it means to seek community and build relationships outside of our normal comfort zones. What is God’s vision for us as embodied in the community of disciples living with and learning from Jesus? This will be a conversation-based series giving us the opportunity to ask questions and learn together.

Food Garden Continues to Provide Fresh Produce to SASS Food Pantry

The Garden Buddies have been busy harvesting hundreds of pounds of produce for the SASS food pantry.

Completely volunteer-driven, the Garden Buddies are a team of parishioners as well as family and friends who have an interest in gardening. All ages are invited to help, and no prior experience is required! Activities include plant maintenance, watering, weeding, harvesting, and delivery of produce. They meet Mondays at 6:00 pm.

The Garden Buddies also planted flowers like marigolds and sunflowers that invite bees, butterflies, and other useful insects.

Serve as a Sunday Morning Usher

We currently need trained ushers for our services. Please sign up on the usher sign-up sheet on the website under the Members tab or see Pastor Andrea.

You Can Help Make Holy Faith More Welcoming to Families. Volunteer 90 Minutes of Your Time in the Nursery

Volunteers are needed the first Sunday of each month to provide an extra set of eyes, assisting our paid caregiver, Erica Swan. CLICKHERETOSIGNUP

Please seek out Lisa Reifert, Christine Robison, or Kelsey Keyes to find out more about what the first Sunday volunteer childcare experience entails. They have each provided this service this summer, and when we get to the time when we have this volunteer ‘second set of eyes” slot filled each First Sunday, we can then advertise to the greater community that we offer childcare on the first Sunday of the month!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have more families with young children join us when they see this?
