Hello, Holy Family!
I have a few fun updates from school for you this week.
First, we will soon be rolling out a fresh new web site! The URL that you can visit at time is
https://23580.sites.ecatholic.com/. We will be updating it throughout October and plan to have it completely ready by November 1! I think you will agree that this new site is much more user-friendly, especially on a hand-held device. Please share your feedback with us, so we can make it as positive for our families as possible. (You may have noticed Xavier unveiled their new site as well. I believe all of the Catholic schools in Cedar Rapids will have a similar site to these by the end of January 2020).
Next, donations have been coming in from friends of Holy Family. For the most part, these are designated by the donors to things like tuition assistance or to teacher classroom support. One recent example is a gift of $500 from the Knights of Columbus that is designated for financial aid to families that transfer here during the school year. We continue to seek and find friends that would like to support our school. If you or someone you know might find meaning in supporting our mission, please let me know!
Finally (and this may seem trivial, but I am nonetheless very excited) our Positively Family podcast is really rolling! In case you don't know, the format includes a quick run through of the newsletter followed by chatting with guests (usually staff) including some personal and professional conversation and always a fun game of some sort. In addition, we often have prizes for our listeners. You can find all of our episodes at
https://anchor.fm/dashboard/episodes.
God bless your family and our school all year long!

Holy Family Scrip News
Thanks to all those who have been ordering Scrip so far this year. In the order this week, we are sending home a couple of forms that need to be signed and returned. They will help us know how to deliver your order and how you would like your rebate. These have to be filled out annually. In this video, families share stories about opportunities created by gift card fundraising, how easy it is to do every day, and how fast earnings add up
.
ShopWithScrip.com/FamilyStoriesVideo
. A new feature this year is the option to pay online by credit card.
The next order will be Monday, October 21, 2019
by 9AM. If anyone is interested in helping, we could use help on Friday mornings from 10-11ish to sort the orders or to pick up the cards at local businesses on Wednesday. Please let Emery know at [email protected].

Update from our ELA teachers:
We are so excited for the 2019-2020 school year, and wanted to share some exciting updates regarding the English Language Arts curriculum. In order to better prepare students to thrive in high school English classes, we have consulted with Regis and St. Joseph Middle Schools to improve and align our curricula. Adding additional classroom and independent reading novels to LaSalle's ELA curriculum allows us to offer a wider variety of authors and genres, while simultaneously increasing academic rigor. One change your child may have already shared with you is the elimination of spelling tests in the 6
th
, 7
th
, and 8
th
grades. Student literacy and spelling will be assessed through book reports, research papers, journals and other writing assignments. This better aligns the Catholic middle schools ELA curricula, and also helps teach vocabulary and grammar within literary context through the various resources we utilize. We are confident that these changes will help students better understand parts of speech, word usage in different contexts, and broaden vocabulary usage in both speaking and writing.
