Hello, Holy Family!
As promised last week, I would like to share with you our technology plan for the year ahead. The plan is being shaped largely by three key factors: 1) the need to replace hardware and software that is becoming a bit antiquated, 2)a very successful walkathon fundraiser, and 3)the interest in continuing to strengthen our school's technology offerings for student growth. With these realities in mind, I am glad to share what is coming up for our technological future.
First, we are purchasing new Dell laptops for our elementary teachers and staff presently. These will replace the pc laptops currently in use. We hope to have these in their hands no later than the end of this month. This will help them to prepare, teach, and assess better than they are currently able to.
Next, we are pricing interactive
Bright Link projection systems with the intention of installing them by January of 2020. These are akin to Smartboards and Promethian boards but with several added elements. They can be used by multiple students at one time, do not require software updates, do not require a board that is a piece of technology (as all of the technology is in the projector), and they last longer than their competitors. I installed 13 of these in my previous school, and they worked like new for at least 6 years. The teachers who will be receiving these in their rooms are those who requested them, and these span K-8. Our hope is to phase in more of these systems each of the next few years.
Starting in January of 2020, we also intend to use federal Erate funding (discounted technology support funds) to purchase more access points (wireless infrastructure) throughout the elementary building. We added 14 all new access points at LaSalle this summer, and one new access point at the elementary, but we need more in order to support the computers and iPads better. We hope to have these installed by summer of 2020, as that depends on the federal program.
The last piece to share is that we are exploring options for our three computer labs. At present, we have about 75 desktop computers. What is most commonly done in schools now is to replace desktop computer labs with Chromebook labs that are wireless. In addition to the signifiant cost savings that this entails, there are additional benefits of mobility, servicing, and space savings. This is not yet determined, nor is the replacement plan for our one-to-one iPad program, which is also being discerned right now.
Your input on this plan is certainly welcome, so if you have thoughts or questions, please let me know!
God bless your family and our school all year long!

1st Grade Field Trip to Veterans Memorial Coliseum
In honor of Veterans Day on Monday, the 1st grade students will be going to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum to attend a short program. Students will leave at 9:30 a.m. and will return to school before lunchtime.
Illness Update from the Nurse
We have been consistently having 12-13 kids sick per day at the St. Jude building and less at LaSalle. The majority of the illness has been symptoms of a fever, headache and sore throat. We have had a couple cases of vomiting. We will continue to ask parents to tell us their student’s symptoms so we can track illnesses. As always we have the students wash their hands with soap and water several times per day. Our teachers wipe the desk off daily. I got my flu shot a week ago. If you are a family that gets flu shots, now is certainly the time to do that. I will keep you informed weekly of our illness trends. Call or email me any questions or concerns.

Morning Arrival
If you are dropping off or walking in with your child
before 8:20 a.m.in the morning, the students are to go directly to the gym
. There are always two teachers in the lunchroom every morning supervising the children. When the 8:20 a.m. bell rings, they are then allowed to go to their classrooms.
We ask that you please not walk your child down the hallways before that time
. Teachers not on duty in the lunchroom are in their classrooms and need this time to prepare for the day. Thank you for your understanding.
Reminder for Cold Weather Dress
Now that the colder weather is approaching, please dress your child in proper clothing. They need to have warm coats, hats, gloves/mittens, snow pants and boots (especially when there is snow). The children will always go outside for recess unless the temperature drops below 10 degrees (without a wind chill factor). We appreciate your help with this.
