Why Do Catholics NOT Eat Meat on Fridays During Lent?
Each Friday, Catholics remember the day Jesus gave His life for us on the Cross. Because Friday recalls His sacrifice, the Church invites us to practice a small act of penance by abstaining from meat. During the holy season of Lent, this simple sacrifice helps us enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s love.
Choosing fish, beans, or vegetables instead of meat is not simply about changing the menu—it is about changing our hearts. By giving up something we normally enjoy, we are reminded that love often involves sacrifice. This small act unites us spiritually with the suffering of Christ during the Crucifixion of Jesus and helps us grow in gratitude for the gift of our salvation.
Friday abstinence also calls us to live more simply and intentionally. When we pause before a meal and remember why we are abstaining, we are invited to turn our thoughts toward prayer, repentance, and compassion for others. In this way, even an ordinary meal can become a moment of grace.
During Lent, may our Friday sacrifices draw us closer to the Lord, deepen our gratitude for His mercy, and help prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter.
