From an Ancient Homily on Holy Saturday

“Something strange is happening—there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.”

Easter Vigil

Lord Jesus, today we ask for the grace to imagine you lying in the tomb, in death. It is from this death - the same death we will all experience - that you are raised. We give thanks for the gift of mercy and life we have been given. May this Easter Vigil liturgy help us to experience the fullest celebration of the Resurrection and a renewal of our sense of Baptism. May we use this opportunity to celebrate your glorious Resurrection, which draws us to the fullness of life with you, for you are God, in the Communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.
