Urgent message from WA State Bishops

Senate Bill 5280 (SB 5280) regarding clergy mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect has been working its way through the state legislature. The state’s Bishops initially supported the mandatory reporting elements in the bill. However, in the last House committee hearing for this bill, protection of the clergy penitent privilege, or seal of confession, was removed from the bill. To be clear, per this bill, the state wants to require that priests break the seal of confession to report child abuse. Per Canon Law, this is prohibited. The bill now moves to the House floor for a potential vote.

We ask that you, your parish council members, and parishioners reach out to your state representatives and ask them to amend SB 5280 to maintain the clergy penitent privilege originally in the bill. You can simply click onto the WSCC’s quick Action Alert link here to do this.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU An older man who is a veteran lived in his van for six years. Thankfully, in the past year he and his beautiful cat moved into an apartment. Several months ago he lost his job. Unemployed for two months, he was without income. Although he found new employment, this neighbor remained anxious to catch up with his rent. The man called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline (206-767-6449) requesting assistance. Thanks to your help, we were able to offer enough rent to ease his anxiety and help him get caught up. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

THANK YOU! All of us were severely affected by the pandemic. That includes some of the most vulnerable people in our region: our brothers and sisters who struggle for safe and stable housing. For the last three years, many St. James parishioners have donated food every week to ensure that Catholic Housing Services could provide nutritious meals every day. With the lifting of Washington State’s mask mandate, we are concluding our Covid Meal Ministry. Thank you to all of you who have been so generous with your resources as you responded to the needs of our brothers and sisters on the streets!

SCAM ALERT! Cybercrime is hitting faith communities nationwide. If you receive a message from Father Ryan (or other Cathedral staff) from a @gmail address asking for help or requesting you to purchase a gift card, please delete it. It is a scam! This email scam is happening across the country. When in doubt, contact the parish office to verify the legitimacy of any request you receive from the parish. Thank you! Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.
