Holy Week and Eastertide 2025

April 13th: Palm Sunday

April 13th is Palm Sunday, also known as the Sunday of the Passion. The service recalls Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem as the crowds spread palm branches along the pathway.

In place of a sermon, we will read the Passion Gospel According to Luke that recalls Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion and burial. This final time of Lenten preparation will lead is to the joy of Easter morning and the glorious news that Jesus is Risen.

Come and worship with us at the 11 o'clock hour. The service will begin in the parish hall with the Liturgy of the Palms, and then proceed over to the Nave for the remainder of the service.

April 17th: Maundy Thursday, 6 p.m.

St. Agnes' will host the various Cowan churches on Maundy Thursday on April 17th, 6:00 p.m. The speaker will be Rev. John Barker.

Maundy Thursday recalls the Last Supper that Jesus held in the Upper Room with the Disciples. The Last Supper is where Jesus gave the new commandment. (The word "maundy" is based on a Latin word that translates to "mandate" or "commandment".)

All are invited to this meaningful time in worship that reflects on Jesus' time before he was crucified. The service is sponsored by Cowan Ministerial Association.

Please note that, as the host congregation, we will serve an increased role in the Maundy Thursday service. We ask all who are able to please come to the service early - around 5:30 p.m. - so that we can go over our instructions for the service itself and for the stripping of the altar.

April 18th: Good Friday, 6 p.m.

The various Cowan churches will gather on Friday, April 18th, 6:00 p.m. at Cowan First Baptist Church for a shared Good Friday event.

All are invited to this very special and solemn time to reflect on Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial. First Baptist Church is located at 316 W. Cumberland St. in Cowan.

The service is sponsored by the Cowan Ministerial Association.

April 19th: Holy Saturday, 7:10 p.m.

At the setting of the sun, the church moves from the quiet observance of Holy Saturday to the joyful reminder of Jesus' Resurrection.

To prepare ourselves for the joyful news of Easter morning, St. Agnes' will gather to light the Paschal Candle on Saturday, April 19th, at 7:10 p.m.

This will be a short service that comes from the Easter Vigil in the Book of Common Prayer.

April 20th: Easter Sunday, 6:30 & 11

Easter Sunrise - 6:30 a.m. at Cowan Montgomery Cemetery

The various Cowan churches will gather for an Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 20th, at 6:30 a.m. The service is a joyful celebration of the empty tomb and the news that Jesus is risen!

Our speaker will be Pastor Roger Speer, Pastor of Cowan Fellowship Church. The cemetery is located at the end of South Willow Street in Cowan.

In case of rain/bad weather, the service will gather instead at Cowan Fellowship Church.

Festival Easter Service - 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes'

Sunday, April 20th, at 11 a.m., we will hold a festival service at St. Agnes' to celebrate The Resurrection of our Lord.

Invite a friend or neighbor to join us for an extraordinary time in worship!

June 8th: Day of Pentecost / Whitsunday

On the 50th day of Eastertide, the church throughout the world celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit and her calling to share the gospel to the ends of the earth.

We invite you to wear something red to represent the "tongues as of fire" mentioned in the Book of Acts.

Updates from our extended church family

Kathleen Black has felt unusually weak in the last few weeks, but is feeling better otherwise. As soon as her strength allows, she plans to be back in church. Gene is also doing fair. We send our love to them and also to Alice.

Nancy Glenn reached out in late March and is feeling better.

We send our prayers and good thoughts to the Pearson family and to Francis Weddington. April 4th marks 1-year of Steve's passing, and April 11th is 1-year of Duncan's passing. May light perpetual shine upon both of them.
